Beth A. | 25 comments There are many technically small used books with very small font. Someone brought this to my attention the other day as I decided to go ahead and sample the 1000ish page count Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell via an ebook. The font is somewhat large by comparison of those books. I decided to see what would happen if I took down the font size, which they have allowed in this new technology of ebooking.

It reduced the 275 page sample by a hundred pages!

Not that is not to say it was an extreme shocker and the book is still long, but I was a bit more confident that I could read it within a month or so. Maybe I like slightly slow and descriptive books but it's not so much of a drudge so far.

Also that just changes things to me in a way that may or may not be good. Its just when people talk about a book as being so incredibly long and it is actually much less...

I don't know...maybe that wasn't the author intention...they and publisher set the book to be a way before electronics and now ebooks are messing with it. Does it matter?...I'm not sure...nor is my math that good to do a conversion of the true length versus the reading of small type. What do you think?

I never really thought about it. I mean my font HAS to be big when I am reading an ebook which annoys me because I am constantly flipping the page which is a PITA when you are riding public transit.

When I read hardcopies it does kinda annoy me of how big the book is but I tend to look at the reviews first for these books to see if it is worth the indulgence but I feel that if the book is a good read and an easy one at that then it is OK to be large in size.

Beth A. | 25 comments The thing is could those books they used to make with tiny tiny font be just as chunky if they were printed larger now? I dunno,it probably is more important that a book is an easy read and interesting. It's just certain printed books develop a reputation of sorts,so is it all that deserved?

Should you be able to change things up and down and everywhere when it's always been standard and unchangeable before?

I'm probably thinking too much about this I suppose...
