Elizabeth (merelyreading) I like Sophie Hannah's novels, and enjoyed watching Case Sensitive last week. Did anyone else see it?

Is anyone watching Wallander? The Kenneth Branagh version I mean. I haven't seen the original Swedish version (BBC 4). A bit gloomy and depressing. I couldn't bring myself to watch it last night, so recorded it to watch later in the week (no plot spoilers please!)

What's everyone else watching?

Haven't got any thing on at the moment but the last thing I watch was Thelma's Gypsy Girls or whatever it's called. Total mindless television!

message 3: by Kate (new)

Kate (abcinthia) I've been wondering if I should read Wallander. I saw on The Book People that they had a set of 3 Wallander books for quite a reasonable price.

I'm not currently watching anything!

message 4: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Shipton | 23 comments Telly is rubbish at the moment, the only thing I am watching is 24 hours in A&E. I didnt notice the Sophie Hannah thing, I have got a couple of her books queued up on my Kindle.

message 5: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Theres never much on in the summer holidays is there?

message 6: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) The Olympics - are you watching? My husband is glued to it. He's a former marathon runner, so is loving the athletics. My daughter is very keen on sports so she watches too. I'm keeping half an eye on it (from behind my book in the evenings :D). Pleased we're doing well with the medals.

message 7: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Yes I'm loving it! I'm feeling very patriotic and am so proud of how well we're doing :D

message 8: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (viciouslittlething) As not very sporty types both me and dh have been hooked. it's been really good to see the positive competitive spirit.

CSI Miami is back, I've been stashing up for a run of Horatio-ness.

I've also been banking the walking dead, but for some reason I started watching it and got really emotional so have left it on bank for a while now.

I've been watching two box set DH bought me for my birthday, season 1-2 of Stargate Universe [pretty good, like an updated Startrek Voyager, which I love] and In Plain Sight, we already watched season 1-2 but the UK don't get the next seasons for a year, so DH bought season 3-4 from the US.

Can't wait for Doctor Who to return.

Did any one catch The Paradise? I can't believe it's finished already. I hope they make a second series.

message 10: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I'm a latecomer to The Killing - will have to catch up with series 1 & 2 on boxset. Anyone else watching it? I love a good crime drama.

I watched some of The Paradise, missed two episodes and then forgot to watch the last two! What I did see I liked though. I'll have to catch up when it gets repeated.

I liked the first episode of The Secret of Crickley Hall on Sunday night. Very creepy.

message 11: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Shipton | 23 comments Is anyone watching Elementary on Sky Living? Its the new remake of Sherlock Holmes with Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson. I think its really well done, Jonny Lee Miller is really as Holmes.

message 12: by Anna (new)

Anna (justanna) | 145 comments I was watching The paradise - have it series linked and didn't watch this week and the blooming thing didn't record!

Love The Secret of Crickley Hall too. I've only read on James Herbert book (forget the name it was about a plane crash - possible Survivors or something). Always thought I'd like to read more of his - shall definitely do now

message 13: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) RIP Larry Hagman :(. Was there ever a more iconic villain than JR?

message 14: by Nicola (new)

Nicola (nicola1) | 61 comments Oh I was devastated, I've been watching Dallas although I never really saw the old series!

I'm watching Gossip Girl and Arrow at the minute. I also love Elementary, Rebecca, Jonny Lee Miller is amazing.

I watched the Iron Lady on DVD a while back. It's wonderfully acted and evocative but I found it a bit sympathetic and fanciful. I'm no Thatcher fan though!

I'm currently catching up with The Killing III which I have recorded. Very gripping, although it took it's time!

message 18: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I've still got The Killing III recorded, waiting for me to find time to watch it!

I'm enjoying watching the documentary about the polar bears on BBC2 this week. There was quite a scary moment in the first part where Gordon Buchanan was in a glass pod set up to film the bears. One came over and started attacking the pod. He was fairly sure it couldn't break the glass but only if it didn't climb on top, which it did try to do. It's fascinating watching them up close.

message 19: by Emma (new)

Emma Glaisher We got Netflix recently, and haven't watched much TV - it's 2 episodes of Breaking Bad a night if possible! Anyone else watched this?

message 20: by Mandy (last edited Jan 19, 2013 09:56AM) (new)

Mandy McNeil | 2 comments I've got Mad Men on the planner so watch that from time to time though I've seen all the episodes anyway. It's my favourite show. I've also just gotten into Revenge though missed the first series. Wish I had gotten into The Killing, it's had such good reviews.

I'm trying to start Game of Thrones on DVD, keep falling asleep though (24 weeks pregnant, nothing to do with the quality of the show).

Any one watching Great British Menu? I don't care much for the Mon-Thu episodes, but enjoy seeing the judges eat the entire meals.

message 24: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I haven't, but am looking forward to Masterchef next week :)

message 25: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Oh yes, is it normal people or celebrities?

message 26: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) It's the normal one this time, amateur cooks. My favourite one.

message 27: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Ah yeah, I enjoy that too. Actually I quite enjoyed the children's version as well!

Jo Weston (joster) | 1697 comments Mod
Jen - I am with you on really enjoying the Friday episodes of GBM. I still watch it Mon to Thurs because I am horribly hooked on the show, but normally am left a bit dissatisfied! Pleased to see that MasterChef is coming back... yey.

Otherwise, not alot! More time to read this week, especially as my other half is away....

message 29: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I'm going to be giving the new drama that starts tonight (2 parter so not a huge commitment), set on Shetland, a go. I know nothing about Shetland, so am just as interested to see the scenery as the story!

I've still got all the Call The Midwife episodes stacked up waiting to be watched. Must find time to see the first series though.

message 30: by Jo (new)

Jo Weston (joster) | 1697 comments Mod
Shetland has caught my eye too - I have loved reading the Lewis Trilogy (have read two so far) and the draw of remotest Scottish islands kept me going through Night Waking too (not too much else did!) so I reckon it could be good continuing on a recent theme in my reading. The Times's TV page said "after this is shown, they'll need more holiday cottages in Shetland!"

message 31: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) If you're interested in continuing the theme of books on remote Scottish islands, I read Sightlines by Kathleen Jamie recently.

It's non-fiction, but she goes to some of the remote islands, including St Kilda, nature-watching. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and have another of her books Findings also to read.

Love Call the Midwife, as always. I'm reading the books now, in bits in between novels.

I'm on Broadchurch, too - it's 'a bit ITV' if you know what I mean, but I'll watch anything with David Tennant (big crush) and Olivia Coleman is amazing in everything she does.

Other than that there's not much on, although I will catch some of Masterchef I expect. Just finished Game of Thrones Season 1 on DVD; I am tempted by the books but they are mammoth and I have so much else to read!

Hi Lisa. I finally watched episode 1 of Broadchurch last night. I really loved it, but I am biased - Ms Colman is a good friend of ours!!!! That said, I think she is utterly fab and soooo versatile. Also with you on the DT crush, right from the early days. I rarely push the ITV button, but in this case I will make an exception.

PS. Thanks Elizabeth for the tip on Sightlines, not one I've heard of but look really interesting.

message 35: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (mrswhams) | 730 comments Mod
Ah Jo, a lady after my own heart!

Someone on Mumsnet said (I'm paraphrasing) that Olivia says more in a single facial expression than most actresses can in a 5-minute scene. I'm totally in agreement with that. She's great. I haven't seen Tyrannosaur yet, but I've enjoyed her in other things, including Green Wing which really showed her comic side :)

message 36: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) David Mitchell tells a rather embarrassing story (about Olivia Colman) in his autobiography Back Story. She may be cringeing at the memory. I would be!

message 37: by Sophie (new)

Sophie I am enjoying Broadchurch but the Dorset accents are dreadful.

I fell asleep in Shetland, wasn't feeling well was it any good?

message 38: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I haven't started watching Broadchurch yet - it's stacking up on my Sky+, and haven't seen Shetland yet either - wasn't feeling well either (last cold of the winter hopefully).

My dad tells me the Dorset accents were awful too! I hate it when they just can't get it right.

The Cornish accent is another one that annoys me when they get it wrong (Wycliffe etc). It's not easy to do, I know, but at least try!!! Mumerset does not cover the whole of the west country! Rant over!

Had meant to watch Broadchurch as it is set in our favourite part of Dorset, but forgot!

Broadchurch is intriguing, I am definitely hooked in. Though introduction a telephone engineer who is apparently a "medium" had better go somewhere and not just be silly, otherwise, it will lose a bit of credibility!

Shetland was disappointing, looked beautiful, and I adore the main male lead actor but it was a bit formulaic and predictable. I also dozed off (there is a pattern here!) so had to rewatch episode 2 this morning whilst doing the ironing....

I'm so glad you guys typed the authors name, I've only heard the advert and I kept thinking Kate Moss...surely not.

Elizabeth (merelyreading) It's that extra e that makes all the difference :o. It's got the actress who played Lady Sybil in Downton Abbey in it.

Broadchurch is getting very good now!

Did anyone try Labyrinth? I haven't read the book but the TV version was disappointingly shonky IMO!

I was going to watch The Village too but I heard it was depressing so am not sure I can be doing with it now.

message 50: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I watched the first episode of Labyrinth last night. I haven't read the book yet either.

I almost gave up half an hour into it, as I couldn't work out what was happening. But then the story started to fall into place. I will watch the second episode just to find out how it ends, but I agree with you, Lisa, it is disappointing.

Bloodthirsty, isn't it?

Oh, and I was planning to watch The Village, but completely forgot about it. I don't need depressing stuff, either. I tend to avoid watching soaps for the same reason.
