I just found your group (I'm kind of new to GoodReads). Hope to have time to participate. I'm the author of about 2-dozen nonfiction cat and dog care/behavior books. And today my first thriller was released--it includes "service dog viewpoint" because don't we all want to imagine what they're thinking? *s* And of course there's also a trained hero cat in the story. . .

Scott Clements (scottclements) | 11 comments I just released my second book:
That Pet Finder Kid - Catnapped by Scott Clements
That Pet Finder Kid - Catnapped

It's intended for the middle grade audience (9 to 13 year old), but it seems adult pet lovers are really enjoying it.

If it sounds like something you would enjoy, and you are willing to give an honest review, I would be happy to send you an ebook copy for review. Just let me know where to send it, and what file format you need (epub, mobi, pdf, etc...)

Here's a book trailer for it:
http://youtu.be/rvzMMKZJNGU

And here's the book description:

Have you ever felt your pets are your only true friends? That's exactly how thirteen-year-old Chet Parker felt every day of his life. After failing at sports, music, and almost everything imaginable, he gave up on ever finding his place in the world. But thanks to an accidental dose of modified dog DNA, things were about to change for Chet. With a new found connection to his six month old dog Zoe, Chet learns that Mr. Fluffy Pants, the cat of the most popular girl in school, has gone missing. Will Chet's off-the-wall investigative methods drive him further down the social ladder? Or will they lift him up to claim his spot as That Pet Finder Kid? A delightful detective story, sure to melt the heart of every pet lover.

Thank you for your time :-)

Sibel Hodge | 5 comments Hi, fellow cat lovers!

Inspired by my own 8 rescue cats, I've recently written my first children's book about cats and wanted to share it with fellow cat lovers

It's a Catastrophe by Sibel Hodge

For Disney story lovers everywhere!

Think Cats & Dogs meets Toy Story…

Warning! Contains fur-raising adventure, wacky characters, laugh out loud comedy, and heart-warming drama.[/B]

The cats at Briarswood Cottage are lucky. After being rescued from the local Cats’ Home by Ma Katz, they live out their days in luxury under the watchful eye of Buster, the mogfather. But all that’s about to change…

When the local mayor announces that the cat population is spreading a deadly disease, their lives are in mortal danger. There’s no time to paws! Somehow, Ma’s moggies have to organize all the neighbourhood cats to unite as one, getting their claws stuck in to prove their innocence and save each other from certain death.

Can they put aside jealous rivalry and tomcat turf wars to work together as a team and save catkind from extinction?

It’s a Catastrophe is a hilarious hairball of a read for ages 8 to 108!

Peace and Love
Sibel :)

Inge Borg (goodreadscominge_h_borg) | 98 comments Hello, all Animal Lovers,

While I normally write Historical Fiction, my cat Pasha persuaded me to write down his and the stories of his Shelter buddies...forsaking my high heels and silk suits, I volunteered at the local Animal Shelter and Pasha and I raised 35 tiny kittens--not all at once--together...Often, I had to smile as I thought, 'if they (my far-away city-friends) could see me now.'

My shelter experience even made me realize that not all dogs bite--most of them just wanted to be loved.

HI, Amy. Having a knowledgeable professional in this group is awesome--and a little scary. By that I mean, it you ever read my book, you'd probably tell this group to ostracize me for the (honest) mistakes/missteps I made while raising shelter kittens--and my own. I hope we can get some lively discussions going among us animal lovers.

Hi Inge--no worries! Shelter kittens (and puppies) are very forgiving, and so should we humans be. Everyone makes mistakes and the only shame would be if we don't learn from them. *s* I'm happy to help if there are questions I can answer. If you have experience raising kittens you're ahead of many folks. Besides, fiction authors get some poetic license, right? We get to make schtuff up, LOL!

Jennifer Priester (jenniferpriester) | 207 comments Mortal Realm Witch Learning about Magic (Mortal Realm Witch #1) by Jennifer Priester

Somehow missed posting on this thread. Anyway, I put up a discussion thread for it already but this is my book. It's called, Mortal Realm Witch: Learning About Magic. The best description I can give you of my book is that it has 6 short stories in it. Each story can be read individually, but they also build on each other to tell one larger story. Although it doesn't sound like it from the title (although you should get the idea from the cover), my book has many animals in it. The first story tells about a girl learning she is a witch, and that her dog can talk and will be teaching her magic. Although this story puts a little more focus on the girl than the dog, the dog plays a huge role in this story. The girl (not a werewolf) also has the ability to change into a wolf naturally without the use of magic. Because of this she is considered to be a protector witch which means that she is supposed to protect wolves. At first, in this book, she begins with teaching and protecting magical wolf pups. The second story is told from the dog's point of view. Then the third story introduces a second dog who becomes a large part of this story and the series. Story 4 is the only story told in third person. The reason is because it is a more involved story of the witch (in her wolf form) as she teaches wolf pups for the second time. Besides teaching the new pups magic she also needs to teach them to hunt and fight as regular wolves. I wanted this story to read more naturally. Next is the story of a girl and the dragon she wants to be her familiar. Later, in story 6, the only new animal to be introduced is a mouse, and although the mouse has a small part in this book, he becomes a large part of the series and will take over the first story in Book Two. You can learn more about my book, the series, meet the characters, read a free PDF story about one of the dogs (Trillman) before he was a dog, and/or meet my anipals and learn about other fiction and nonfiction books I am working on here: http://www.mortalrealmwitch.com/

Three excerpts from the book can be read here:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... Two of these excerpts is from the story featuring the wolves.
Currently my book is only available online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble in paperback, and Kindle eBook.

I don't think I am forgetting anything, but if I have left something out there is a good chance you can find whatever it is on the Mortal Realm Witch website listed above. Anything else you might want to know such as a more detailed description of each story (with some spoilers) can be found on a review of my book on Amazon, links to my social networking pages for myself and my publishing company can be found through my website, as well as my blog information including links to past posts and a list of future ones as well as a link to the blog itself.

Jane Miller (janemiller) | 15 comments Amy,
Thanks so much. You are a gem! It is my work and passion. It is a very exciting time for us with this upcoming event:
MARIEL HEMINGWAY KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR “HEALING COMPANIONS, INC.” FUNDRAISER
On April 8, 2013, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, join actress Mariel Hemingway to hear about her search for holistic and balanced health in the face of mental illness and to hear heartwarming and powerful stories about local individuals’ transformative journeys with their psychiatric service dogs.

Cleveland, Ohio - March 13, 2013: Jane Miller, LISW, IAABC-CDBC & AABP- CDBC, discovered, through her dog’s interaction with her clients, the healing power of dogs to change and enhance the lives of their human companions. Her book, Healing Companions, Ordinary Dogs and Their Extraordinary Power to Transform Lives, shows how the dogs can change and enhance the lives of their human companions. Since then, Miller has been training psychiatric service dogs (PSDs) for people with psychiatric disabilities such as depression, post-traumatic stress, eating disorders, bipolar, anxiety and panic attacks. She pursued and received certification as a dog behavior consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavioral Consultants and the Association of Animal Behavior Professionals.

In 2012, Miller started Healing Companions, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting individuals severely limited in their ability to function due to mental illness to lead lives with dignity, productivity, freedom and self-reliance through partnership with service dogs. Not only do the dogs help their handlers but the dogs are saved themselves as all of Miller’s PSDs are rescue/shelter dogs. Unfortunately, PSDs are not covered or subsidized by insurance. It costs about $20,000 to train, take care of and cover all of the expenses for a PSD, an amount most people cannot afford out-of-pocket. Providing assistance in covering this cost is one of Healing Companions’ primary goals.

In 2013, actress Mariel Hemingway joined Healing Companions Inc., as an Honorary Board Member. Hemingway believes in finding many ways for people to lead physically and mentally healthy lives and seeks to be a voice for holistic and balanced well-being. As part of this work she leads wellness retreats, sharing her insights about nutrition, health, and connecting with nature, some of which are present in her new book, The WillingWay. Her new documentary, Running from Crazy, about the Hemingway family’s history of suicide and mental illness, is an exploration of her own journey to create a healthy life for herself and her children and is screening at the Cleveland International Film Festival.

We are honored to announce that Hemingway will be the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for Healing Companions, Inc. on April 8 at 5:00 pm at the Riverview Room, Ritz Carlton,Tower City, Cleveland, Ohio. Come hear her clients’ stories of how their shelter/rescue dogs trained to be PSDs have provided truly remarkable benefits to their lives.

For more information about the event or to donate, visit http://www.healing-companions.com/.

Richard Parise | 5 comments Thanks for creating this clever group. As a lifelong animal lover, I have an eBook on Amazon for children and "the young at heart." It's called The Rhymes and Ramblings of Cantankerous Creatures. The book combines a short story about a young girl's pet rat with a variety of comical animal rhymes. Have a great day. I've included this short poem for all camel lovers.
CAMELS
Some Camels have one hump.
Some Camels have two.
Why nature has done this,
I haven’t a clue.
Perhaps it’s to help,
Guide them at night.
One humpers bear left,
Two humpers bear right?
Or could it just be,
Say for vanity’s sake,
One hump being common,
So some add a fake?
Or is it just simply,
The luck of the draw?
Two humps you’re a Mama,
One hump you’re a Pa!

To combat the boredom of being pets, these two conduct private investigations for their fellow animals. Gatsby's a smart-mouthed orange, stripey cat who loves going outdoors, talking to witnesses, investigating leads and putting his neck on the line in the pursuit of justice. Yoshi's a witty and wise black cat who won't step a paw outside of his house but who can process the information that Gatsby brings him into solutions for even the trickiest mysteries. From shutting down dogfighting operations to stopping attempted canineicide, these guys handle it all and do it with humor and style. Jennifer Priester (jenniferpriester) | 207 comments Mortal Realm Witch The Magic Continues (Mortal Realm Witch #2) by Jennifer Priester

This is my recently released second book in the uniquely written Mortal Realm Witch series. Like Book One, it contains stories featuring many different animals.

Just as before there are 6 short stories that can be read individually or as chapters to continue the main story. This one reads a little bit better as individual chapters than Book One did.

Story 1 is about the relationship between a young witch who chooses her new familiar, a little white mouse, based off nothing more than his looks. She quickly begins to discover that while it might be his job to do so, Sampson has no interest in teaching her magic.

Story 2 is the story of a warlock that is about to start his first day at a new school. Because it is possible to do so he uses magic to take his cat to school with him. Later that same day, the warlock loses his cat and upon finding her has to figure out a way to get her back from a young girl.

Story 3 features the adventure of a dog that is on the search for a home and is finding this hard due to the fact that he can talk and he happens to be a Saint Bernard. His biggest dream is to become the familiar of a witch or warlock.

Story 4 features a few extra short stories as DWW presents memories from the past in all new stories. In these are a few stories featuring Trillman. The first one is called Testing Trillman and the whole story is actually available to read right here: http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/3.... The next one is the story of what DWW thinks happened that made Trillman, the Golden Retriever who was her familiar for most of Book One, finally give up with her. Next in this group is the story of how Max, the chocolate Labrador Retriever, became her familiar. After that is one of her most memorable experiences with Max.

Story 5 features Max again as he teaches another witch a little about wizards after she meets one at school.

Story 6 is told directly after the events of the fifth story so Max is once again in this one. This time Max is there to offer occasional input and advice to his new witch. Trillman also appears in this story in order to help his former witch in training from Book One, DWW.

You can learn more about this book and the other books in the series, meet some of the characters, and more at: http://www.mortalrealmwitch.com

And to learn more about me, and other books of mine you can check out my author website, specifically the Meet the Anipals section, at http://www.jenniferpriester.com.

Cat Warren | 8 comments Hi, all. I, too, will be respectful about not posting and pushing my own book (lots of great animals books out there!) But I do have a book being released Oct. 1 with Touchstone division of Simon & Schuster. It's about working dogs and their noses: What the Dog Knows: The Science and Wonder of Working Dogs. It's a combination of a bit of memoir (about my training and working with my German shepherd, as a cadaver dog), what we know about the science of scent, the cognitive abilities of working dogs, some mystery and forensics, the history of using dogs' noses. I also tell the stories of other working dogs, and their handlers and trainers (including tracking, trailing, and patrol dogs). I was thrilled that I got my first copy last night -- hot off the presses. October 1 is almost here.

Autobiographical account of my life with animals. It has a Buddhist/Taoist/Hindu orientation. Emphasises the need for humane treatment of our domestic animals and protection of wild ones. Tanya Sousa | 40 comments So many wonderful books!

I write magazine articles, creative non-ficiton stories for anthologies etc, and children's books which almost all deal with animals/kindness to all living things.

My latest book, coming out either in December or the spring of 2014, is called "The Starling God". In the spirit of Watership Down, it's a book for adults told from another species' perspective -- birds. The book looks at human behavior towards other living things and their environment from this birds'-eye view. I'll announce here when it's in print. Forestry Press, a new publishing venture in New England, is publishing it. More later! Thank you for the opportunity to mention this.

Tanya Sousa | 40 comments Hi!
My environmental novel, "The Starling God" (yes, a starling is the main character AND the hero) is out for preorder with forestry press. This is the link:

I would like to have as many people read the ideas in this book as possible so they are challenged to think -- and question the idea that one species is "good" while another is "bad". The novel also shows, through the birds' eye point of view, how our iron grip on the environment affects other living things.

Tanya. I look forward to reading "The Starling God".

I am very fond of starlings and their close relatives Mynah birds, lots of them here in my garden in Thailand. Will it be an e book or only hard copy?

Tanya Sousa | 40 comments Thanks Stewart! Starlings ARE amazing birds (all animals are amazing of course, but...). It is available for preorder right now as a paperback, but I'm going to talk to the publisher about making it ebook as well. It's a new company, so they are learning.

If you do get the book in one form or another, I'd love to hear what you think. Here's a review by a very popular novelist around New England, USA, Howard Frank Mosher:

“In an era when entire ecosystems the world over are under unprecedented assault, the acclaimed children's and adults' author Tanya Sousa has written the perfect story for our times. Part fable, part natural history, and beautifully written throughout, THE STARLING GOD places animals, rather than humans, at the center of the world. With great energy, scientific exactitude, imagination, and reverence for all living things, Sousa reveals how, in nature, there is indeed much more in the world than is dreamt of. Adults and children alike will love THE STARLING GOD equally.”

That's great Tanya. Keep me posted on the ebook progress. If it doesn't happen, I will have to figure how to get the paperback here in Thailand or to UK next May. Happy to review when I get a copy.
Starlings and Mynah birds make an appearance in a couple of stories in my book; "OF MICE & ZEN". They are smart and adaptable birds. The Mynah Birds here have a special call to demand that I feed them.Of Mice and Zen. Animal Encounters in the Life of a Wandering Buddhist

I'll have to look up that book as well! Thank you for sharing info on wonderful and often misunderstood creatures. :-)
