The Seasonal Reading Challenge discussion

It's time to start thinking about fun tasks for the Fall Challenge. The bonus theme is WATER.

As in past challenges, some tasks may revolve around the seasonal theme of FALL. Others may reflect the bonus theme of WATER. Other tasks may have nothing to do with either of these themes (they’re just fun ideas for unique reading challenges).

Feel free to post as many ideas as you can come up with. Don't worry about repeating what another player might have already suggested. The more ideas, the better!

The moderators will draw from these ideas as well as their own to create the 5,10, and 15 point tasks. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

For water:

Read a book that features a water sport

Read a book that has a water setting: island, stream, lake, ocean etc.

Read a book that has a beverage like water or some other beverage.

Waterfalls----- fall down-
Read a book about going downward in some way--
falling, descending, lowering etc. Being abased,
losing a job, a downward spiral of some sort---
a health decline----

Water represents birth---
Read a book about a new beginning of some sort, a marriage, a new family, starting over---

H2O - read a book with 1 H and 2 Os in the title or author's name.

A drop in the bucket - read one book from a series that has 10+ published books in it.

I love your bucket idea-- How about a book on our bucket list--- books you must read before you die.

Water Under the Bridge---
It's not really gone-
Read a book from the last challenge that you did not get to read for this challenge or a book you started and never finished (if you read all the books last challenge)

Wishing well-
What would you wish? Read a book associated with something you would wish for.

Water and Oil don't mix-

Read a book that has opposites in the title.
I think we did something like this one before, but I liked it.

Fish live in water. Read a book with a fish on the cover or in the title.

Boats - read a book set at least partly on a cruise or other sea voyage.

Halloween-
Read a book with a "character" on the cover that could be a Halloween costume: vampire, ghost, pirate, gypsy, etc.
Read a book by an author who has a birthday in October.

Read a book with a pumpkin on the cover.

Thanksgiving-
Read a book with food on the cover.
Read a book with a turkey or any bird on the cover.
Read a book with a cornucopia or fruit on the cover.
Read a book with football or a sport on the cover
or about a sport.
Read a book about family.

how about something to do with countries that are on the water/ocean and those that are land-locked

I like this! It could even end up being a bit trickier than the one from this season, which I'm all for.

Read a book with a ship or bridge on the cover (something that helps you cross over the water).

Since water is used for cooking, read a book with at least one recipe in it.

Water makes me think of rain, and what I like about rain is the sound it makes - drip! drop! plop! plink! Read a book with a "sound word" in the title.

Water gives life, but it can also take it away. Read a book where a natural disaster such as a flood or a tsunami occurs.

Since clouds are made of water vapor, read a book with clouds on the cover.

In honor of Labor Day, read a book that is mainly set within a character's workplace.

read a book about a historical naval battle

did you know the Army has more ships than the Navy (yeah, shocks me too) - read a book that challenges your beliefs/knowledge on a topic

Alternately for H20
Read a book where all the words in the title or the author's first, middle, and last initials are letters between H and O (so I, J, K, L, M, and N).

Morning and Night
There's a sailor's saying, "Red sky at morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailors delight." Read a book with either a day scene or a night scene on the cover (or, if a 15pt task, read both).

Break Out the Boots!
We may still be in sandals when the season starts, but some of us will be in boots by the end. Read a book with boots on the cover OR read a book with a type of shoe in the title.

And, of course, the zodiac one!

What goes around comes around:
Read a book with a title or author name that begins and ends with the same letter.

Making it difficult:
Choose a book by an author whose last name starts with I, Q, U, V, X, Y, or Z.

Two for one:
Read a book that could be used for another task on the current SRC (although you can only count it for this one.)

The E is silent:
Read an author with a silent letter in his/her name.

Still waters run deep:
Title with word of a deep water body of water-=lake, ocean, tarn, loch, OR shallow water --puddle, pond, etc.

Read a book with a fish out of water theme where the main character is thrust into an unfamiliar life.

Water is a common symbol found in dreams. Depending on its depth, temperature, clarity, and condition, it is thought to represent the dreamer's emotional state. What other symbols tend to appear in your dreams? Read a book with a picture of one the other symbols your dreams tend to conjure up on the cover.

I really like Butterflycager's "sound word" and Donna Jo's "two for one" ideas.

The first letters from September, October, and November spell the word SON. Read a book where the first letter of words in the title can be combined (in order) to form a word of three letters or more. For example: Dead Until Dark spells "DUD", A Hero of Our Time contains "HOOT", and Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln contains both "TORT" and "GOAL."

That's cool Kara! I was just thinking in terms of the author name/title containing 'son', but yours is way better!

Janice CA, I like the fish out of water theme idea - I enjoy books like that.

And I like the dream idea too - in my case, the symbol would be a clock because I'm always running late in my dreams!

I love the fall and call it Sweater Weather.
Read a book with a sweater on the cover.

- Farms organize pumpkin mazes for Halloween. Read a whodunnit/heist/featuring a rescue or escape book.
- Books with fall colors on the cover. Yellow, red, brown, gold, orange.
- September 19 is Talk like a pirate day. Read an adventure book/a book with pirates/set on the high seas/a book with invented words or language.
- We set our clocks back in fall. Read a historical book or a book involving travelling back in time.

Going Overseas

Read a book set in a country that you would have to travel "over seas" to get to. For example, I live in New York, I could *not* read a book set in Mexico because I could get there without traveling over water.

Representing A Seasonal Sport (Football) - American Football not Soccer as some refer as. Example: (NFL) - National Football League

go to the summer reading challenge finished tasks page and open the page number of your birthday. Mine is nov 15th so I would open page 15.
from there we could either do read a book or a book by an author listed on that page or read a book from the read shelf of one of the people that posted on that page.

Where I live, the circus comes to town in the fall. Read a book having to do with a circus or a carnival (there is a Listopia list that would help out here).

Oh, this one is fun! I always like the ones that incorporate other people's book lists. Maybe one that's "read a book off the 'read' shelf of someone whose birthday is in the fall," too!

i did like the person who joined GR during the summer months task and that one could be easily adapted for the other seasons ;)

The Presidential election will take place this November in the US. Some ideas:

A book about politics or government or a revolution (can be fiction)

A book written by a president or leader, or a biography

A book that takes place in a country's capital city

I would be a failure as a chemist if I didn't correct that H2O is actually 2 Hs and 1 O. (Maybe making it even more difficult.)

me either and I just graduated with a degree in biomedical sciences haha!

I missed it too with a degree in Chemistry AND currently a grant writer. Twice I should have picked that up!

Labor Day

Read a book in which a character is pregnant.

Fall (season) - read a book set during the fall months; read a book with a leaf(ves) on the cover or with the words leaf/leaves in the title; read a book with fall colors as the primary color of the book cover.

Fall - read a book with the word "fall" or any of its derivatives in the tille (fell, falling, fallen)

Read a book whose title includes familiar objects of fall - leaves (leaf), trees, halloween (costumes, pumpkins), Thanksgiving (horn of plenty, banquet, indians, pilgrims, turkey)

Water - read a book with water in the title (sea, pond, waterfall, stream, etc)

Johnny Appleseed--Read a book with a word from the name of a variety of apple in the title (ex. "pink" or "lady" for pink lady apples)

School starts here right after Labor Day. Read a book with a teacher as a main character.

Which One Are You Again?--One of the hardest things about a new school year is remembering the names of all the kids...especially when you've got five with the same name in a class! Read a book by an author whose first name is one of the top-10 popular for 2012.

Reading Lists--In English class we always had to read specific books. Read a book from a list of popular High School English books (like http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/h...).

Banned books week is September 30-October 6 this year. Read a book from the list of top 100 banned/challenged books (http://www.ala.org/advocacy/banned/fr...) (page count would apply, of course)

National Coming Out Day is October 11. Read a book with an LGBT main character or by an LGBT author.

The Cat Came Back--we used to sing this at Halloween when I was a kid. Read a book with any kind of cat (or someone dressed as a cat, since it's Halloween, after all!) on the cover.

Monster Mash--read one of the original horror books that monsters came from (like Frankenstein or Dracula), then read a modern book that uses the same monster archetype (like any vampire book ever written).

A Ghost by Any Other Name--read a collection of ghost stories or scary stories from a country other than your own.

Which Witch?--Homophones (and heterographs)! Read two books that share a word that sounds the same but is spelled differently.

I remember one from awhile ago that used the "what to read next" site. That was a fun task, and I wouldn't mind a repeat of that.

Hold Your Breath- read a book that makes you gasp. This could be a book that you find controversial, scary, romantic...

Glaciers- a book set in a country or state that has glaciers.

The great lakes- a book that contains the first letters of the Great lakes. Superior, Michigan, Erie, Huron, Onterio

A book about ships

I live in Minnesota which is the birthplace of the Mississippi River. Read a book that is set in a state that touches the Mississippi.
