Aside from whatever we nominate as our September Booker-themed read, is anyone planning to read any of the nominated books? I so enjoyed reading the whole Orange longlist this year I'm considering reading the Bookers too, though quite a lot are very new or not yet released and so it might get a bit expensive!
I read a little while ago, which was lovely. I'm a bit surprised it was nominated though, as the Booker prize has a reputation for being quite lofty and this is a down-to-earth book, though still beautifully written. I've since read that the judges wanted the books on the list to be more accessible than in previous years, which explains why they've avoided the likes of Martin Amis and Ian McEwan and gone with younger authors and less highbrow novels.
I just finished , which was amazingly good but disgustingly horrible at the same time. It was really well written and immersive, but the characters and their situations are so squalid and vile I was glad to finish it and move on.
I also ordered , which just arrived, so I'll probably start that next, and I've pre-ordered as I love Will Self's writing.
What about you? Anyone fancy reading the Bookers with me?
