Cherie (cheriereads) This is the place for general chit-chat. Book related or not.

Cherie (cheriereads) How's everyone doing? I can't believe how much this group has grown in just 24 hours! Thanks everyone for giving this group such a great start!

On another note, can I just say that I cannot wait for school to start! My 5 year old is going nuts and that's driving me nuts. lol

And, if anyone is looking for good books for their kids I can highly recommend Freight Train (Caldecott Collection) by Donald Crews . I think I've read this 50 times to my 18 mo old today alone!

I remember reading that one. How about hungry caterpillar or chicka chicka boom boom ( I can still recite that one without the book )

message 4: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) He likes the Very Hungry Caterpillar also. I don't have a copy of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom right now but my older son read it in pre-school last year and then walked around reciting it for weeks!

Both my boys just love trains. My younger one loves cars also and we've also read Smash! Crash! by Jon Scieszka quite often.

Barb A fun one for kids a bit older than your 5yo is Edgar, Allan, and Poe, and the Tell-Tale Beets, by Natalie Rompella. When we added that to our library collection, I think everyone on the staff read it while it was going through processing LOL

message 6: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) I'll have to remember that one. I'll look for it and take a peek next time we go to the library.

I've noticed today that I have to keep editing my posts because of typos! So annoying! My laptop is seriously on it's way out. It's slow, the keys stick... I think we may order a new one this weekend. What a pain. BUT, it's always fun to play with a new toy, right? :)

I keep hearing about this book, I need to find it at the library for my son. I've decided to read through the "1001 children's books to read before you grow up" list with him, and I'm pretty sure Hungry Caterpillar is on it.

Make sure you back up all your important 'stuff'!! Mine was doing that, and I kept putting off doing anything about it ... until the day it just plain died on me :(

message 9: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) Oh, I had that happen to me a couple of years ago. Never again! I now have an external HD that I back everything up on to. I lost all of my first son's baby pics. I was so upset! Then I realized that I had uploaded all of the good ones to Winkflash so I could at least order prints. That was a relief!

As long as the external HD doesn't crash! Daughter lost a lot of her stuff that way :( Seems that the bigger they are (capacity-wise), the more delicate they are -- and the more likely to crash as well.

message 11: by Bree (new)

Bree (coffeebeanbookshelf) Yep, I lost a 1TB EHD...it was working FINE and then I needed something off it a few months later and it wouldn't start. I've had 2 fail on me...the first one it was the case that failed (it now resides as a secondary backup drive in my desktop), now this 1TB one. Fortunately for me, all my photos were backed up. Unfortunately for me, all my digital scrapbooking supplies, layouts and my own products (I was a designer) were not backed up anywhere else...thousands of dollars are on that drive! I think it's still recoverable, I need to take it in, but it's expensive to have them do it.

My laptop is on it's way out as well...I'm hoping it will last until after Christmas/New Years (we are planning on going to Mexico) and then I'll get the Macbook Pro I've been drooling over for years...

message 12: by Barb (new)

Barb I had one EHD crash on me, but tried something totally funky that one of daughter's computer-savvy friends recommend -- and it worked! He said to put it in a heavy-duty zip-top bag, put it in the freezer laying (lying?) flat, and leave it there for 30 minutes -- and only 30 minutes! Take it out, let it warm up to room temp, and "it should work again."

I was skeptical, to say the least, but I wasn't going to be able to retrieve the files any other way, so I tried it. Imagine my surprise when it actually WORKED!!

message 13: by Bree (new)

Bree (coffeebeanbookshelf) I've heard that one, too, Barb. Unfortunately, I assumed it was my case first and replaced it and it still didn't work, so I took the new case back to the store and had already thrown away the old one (I broke it to get the drive out). So, it's just a lonely little hard drive...I don't even have anything to try to connect it with, lol.

I know I can go to any geek store and get a kit that has the parts I need to try to recover it myself...I've watched YouTube videos on how to do it, as well. Someday...or I'll just go the easy (albeit more exensive) route...

message 14: by Barb (new)

Barb Why does easy ALWAYS equal expensive? LOL

message 15: by Barb (new)

Barb Sorry I've been AWOL in this group, but life is getting crazy around here. Son is getting married in three weeks, and since we have a lot of family coming in from all over the country, we have a lot of cleaning/tidying to do before they get here. I've been trying to do little bits of decluttering here and there, but hubby refuses to see that a lot of the mess piled up is his stuff -- and he hates it when daughter and I move his stuff *@@*

On top of that, work has been crazy busy ... and my newly-diagnosed arthritis is flaring up more and more often ... and my eyes have been giving me problems (early stages of glaucoma here, it also flares up now and then) ... and the CCC group has been busy (which is a GOOD thing, it just doesn't leave me much time to play elsewhere!) ... and ... well, you all know how it goes, I'm sure ...

how about thomas the tank enginge?

message 17: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) Wow Barb, congratulations on your son's marriage! I know how that goes with the house. My house is never as clean as it is the day I have company coming. :) Sorry to hear about your arthritis and your eyes! That stinks! Hopefully you have some good meds that can at least take the edge off for you.

I have the same problem now with visiting CCC! lol I check in now and again but I haven't had as much time since SCC has taken off. I really never expected it to grow so quickly! I signed up for some of the new CCC challenges starting this month though so I'll be checking in over there again soon.

Teresa, my older son was obsessed with Thomas from about the time he was 2. It's started to subside a little bit as he gets new friends with other interests but I still currently have a train table in my dining room instead of a dining room table - I kid you not. I think we have every type of track, too - wooden, track master, etc. Maybe 4 different sets all with multiple add ons and trains. Luckily we had a friend who had a huge collection and sold it to us for a great price way back when.

Cherie (cheriereads) I'm having such a nice day today! My mom took my boys for the day/night so I actually have some peace and quiet! Hubby and I went out for lunch together and didn't have to keep saying "sit down, talk quietly, don't play with your food, etc." Now I can actually sit on my couch and relax and watch whatever the heck I want on tv!

Don't get me wrong - I love my kids - but sometimes it's nice to not have them here. lol

message 19: by Barb (new)

Barb I understand that completely, Cherie! Enjoy your free evening :)

message 20: by Kris (new)

Kris (kmell33) It's been a crazy weekend around here. We moved my oldest daughter on Saturday, which seemed to take all day. Ugh...

The rest of the weekend was getting my 2 boys ready for their first day of school tomorrow. I have an 11th and 9th grader. We consolidated districts so this will be the 1st day in a new school and new area.

My 21 month old decided I was giving too much of my attention to her older siblings and needed her attention also, whether good or bad. She chose bad.

Definately ready for work tomorrow(can't believe I'm saying that)LOL

message 21: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (cheriereads) lol Kris. Hopefully things will calm down for you now that school has started. I know I'm trying to get in a new routine myself. My older boy started kindergarten last week and his little brother now doesn't know what to do with himself during the day. It's going to take some adjustment. I'm a stay at home mom so I've been looking forward to the first day of school for a couple of weeks now. lol
