I'm in the mood for gore.

American Psycho - the goriest thing i have ever read, but also quiet boring

haha that's a simply great review.
it's on my to buy list

I thought Misery by Stephen King the hardest to read. It is been the only book I have had to read the end of to see the outcome before carrying on and I used to read loads of horror books in my late teens.

The other book I found disturbing was the story of the hostages in Lebannan during the eighties especially An Evil Cradling by Brian Keenan.

Precious Blood by Jonathan Hayes, is pretty violent with some sickening detail. Great book though!

I'm not sure if gore is the right word...but the most brutal novels I've read include...The Hypnotist and Battle Royale.

I am currently rereading Aztec a truely gruesome historical fiction.

I just finished "No Child of Mine" last night by Susan Lewis. It wasn't necessarily gruesome but bothersome. The 3 year old little girl in the book was being repeatedly abused. The book bothered me. I don't like to read books like this. I didn't realize the free giveaway was going to touch on this. The rest of the book was good, however.

I'm with on that Lorrie, too uncomfortable for me!

I didn't really enjoy The Soul Collectors but it's certainly horrific. A much better book, although still gory is Blind Eye. The latter is set in Aberdeen, Scotland and some may struggle with the dialect at times, but a good story and full of black humour.

I've got to say it's a graphic novel called: Brought to Light.

The Hypnotist was pretty gruesome as was Battle Royale. I also loved Let the Right One In and it was gruesome in parts as well.

The Hypnotist looks interesting, but I didn't like Let the Right One In. I don't think I got through all of it. The imagery throughout was too much for my taste.

The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy The Shocking Inside Story

Ann Rule writes the most bloody books I have read. She told some things about Ted Bundy that I wish I had never read. I still think women need to read these books as there are men like this out there.

Some of her other books are horrifying too. One about a politician in the NJ area who killed his girl friend. You won't believe it. Only read these if you are NOT prone to nightmares. However, the book that gave me the worst nightmare is about a vampire in Chicago. Art in the Blood

I keep wanting to read Let the Right One in but not sure I should read it. I like a little scare but not nightmares.

This one is also gory but terrifying however, it won't give you nightmares and he switches back and forth with boring stuff so you can calm down!

I didn't finish the book because it was so horrific, which is unusual for me as I usually stick with a book until the bitter end. However, Pet Sematary, Stephen King was so very graphic and violent that I there it in the trash bin. It is the stuff of nightmares.

When I see some people have listed it as their favorite book, I am somewhat puzzled.

I have owned that one for about a year now but a friend warned me not to read it. Stephen King can sure be scary.

I always plan something scary for Halloween every year. I haven't chosen one yet so glad for these ideas.

The first one that comes to mind when you say gruesone would be

The Angel of Vengeance by Wade H. Garrett is the most gruesome, disturbing, politically incorrect book that I have ever read. It has a great story line and filled with dark humor. I have read other books that people say are gruesome, but they do not come close to this one.

Also, American Psycho. A little boring, but does have plenty of gore.

Oh, I agree! and it would have been better if he had at least been caught and punished but he seemed to have a quick and easy death.

Patient Zero for me was pretty gruesome with all the violence it had but it was such a compelling read. I would recommend it to anyone . :)

I am sure it is not the 'most gruesome book available' but there are some gruesome moments in 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' by Haruki Murakami. (Not wanting to add spoilers so shan't elaborate.) Another book I found gruesome was Louis de Bernieres Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord..towards the end...Erhhh...

A different kind of gruesome than the suggestions above, but I found Tampa by Alissa Nutting hard to read because of its disgusting scenes. Wetlands is another one that comes to mind in that vein.
