Wow Dennis. The DC3 was quite a plane wasn't it and some are still flying. This is the first time I heard of taxiing with the tail up. It seems they would have to taxi at quite a high speed to do that. I don't think that could be done today at our crowded airports.


Dennis Coates I flews as aircrew (cabin purser) on DC3's in 1952, one of my earliest jobs. The airline was B.E.A. (British European) and the favourite trick of ex RAF pilots was to taxi with the tail up. I think we carried less than 30 passengers and the limit of operations (from Northolt) London was from Gibraltar to Cairo with Instanbul the furthest destination in the Mid East.
The air crews were a small but very skilful team, very happy to fly DC3's which was known as t Dakota.
