Rereading CITY and it should be required reading 💚

Okay this has sat on my shelf since it came out because I bought it and then people were so down on it it dampened my desire to read it but like— I LOVE IT ?? Here I am halfway through? justice for the Goldfinch?

Oooh almost lost the thread when I got busy at work but we’re back in it bbs and Andrei really seems to be in crisis about how boring everything in his life is which is making him infinitely more interesting

Either I really love War and Peace now or Vol. II Part I was just particularly wonderful. Duels! Proposal! Singing! Polish Dancing ! Resurrection! Everyone is in their feelings !

Volume one complete ! Andrei has seen the sky and met napoleon and is obsessed with the sky. Rostov is deeply in love with the Tsar and it might be the most sensual relationship in the book. Pierre is BAE. Natasha claims when she closes her eyes she can’t even recall what Boris looks like nope not even a little. More Natasha please. Fewer military stratagems.

first war chapters ! I love Rostov and Tushin most. Rostov because he’s a coward who rhapsodizes about gorges during battle and loves brightly lit houses on winter nights. Tushin because he is small and calls everyone dear heart and is like a symphony conductor with his cannons. It occurs to me neither seems likely to survive the war- but I will hope otherwise because I simply will not make it through without them.

Finished Part One! My favorite bit so far :

A fresh attempt. Last time quit because everyone who wasn’t Pierre was boring to me. This time I have made it to Natasha and now there seems hope …. This will be a slow goal — with some hopes of finishing by spring ?
