This is going to sound weird again! I do not fully understand the origin of the inspiration to write; I am just grateful when it appears. And, I try to treat it with reverence and awe. The question reads a bit like getting in shape to participate in an athletic event. Writing inspiration is more like falling in love. So, if the question was, "How do you prepare to fall in love?" it would seem odd. Inspiration is enhanced by receptivity, patience, openness, and being non-judgmental, just like falling in love. But, figuring out when and how inspiration actually occurs is like trying to crack the code on the exact formula for falling in love.

The inspiration for my newest book (Sprinkles: Creating Awesome Experiences Through Innovative Service and due out in February, 2015) came from my three granddaughters. They taught me that a great cookie becomes a really special cookie only when adorned with sprinkles, icing or cherry. Service is the same. Customers want their experiences to be more than great…they want them special. As customers, we like great service; but we love service that takes our breath away--the kind that leaves us “awed” not just “wowed.” This new book is about how to deliver an experience as enchanting and memorable as a special cookie.

A new book entitled, Sprinkles: Creating Awesome Experiences Through Innovative Service. The pub date is February 10, 2015. This is my 21st book and I am devoting lots of time, energy and resources to making it a best-seller so it can impact the lives of many people. It follows my last book (The 9 1/2 Principles of Innovative Service) published by Simple Truths in 2013 and continues the innovative service theme started with my 2009 book, Take Their Breath Away published by Wiley.

This is gonna sound weird…so bare with me! Writing is about joining a magical world of ideas; it is not a relationship to be controlled or directed. Writing is like connecting with a wise friend who only shares when you are willing to listen and to partner. Humility, gratitude and discipline are vital attributes to bring to the creative process. Like friendship, your relationship with the universe of wisdom is directly proportionate to your willingness to make sacrifices on its behalf and be generous in your respect for the creative process. Told you it would be weird…but, it is true!!

Making a difference in the lives of many people. There are few things more enjoyable than sitting around a campfire sharing stories. As humans, we have done that since we were humans. That tradition is continued with books and articles…only without the fire! Writing is a magical way of nurturing in the mind of another person the same imagery that is in your mind. It is a powerful tool for inspiration, instruction and influence.

Writer's block is about a fear of error or failing to say something smart or valuable. The best way to deal with any fear is to charge it! I just write anyway. Sometimes finding another creative activity to do (I like to play the piano) can jumpstart your writing. The bottom line is this: As, my granddaddy always said, "The best way to turn a mule is to first get the mule moving." It is the same with writing. Start writing…anything...and at some point the muses will join you.
