Join a writers' group, face to face preferably or online if not available. These people will become your initial beta readers - and you for them - so choose wisely. This is not a one-way street. When you think your writing can't be improved, pay for an edit of 20-50 pages. That'll show you that it can, and will point the way forward.

My most recent book - a novella in ebook only formats - is "The Paintings". It came about via a fast email exchange with an artist I know. I was keying in a flippant response and halfway through a sentence the archetypal lightbulb lit in my brain.
