It depends on the author. The limit as far as an author is concerned is his or her own imagination. For me, as long as I am true to the characterization in the original, I am comfortable.

My way might not work for all. But I generally don't attempt to write when I am not in the mood. Generally, I am able to write better if I wait for a few days. I have never suffered from anything like a permanent block.

Read a lot. Read good books. And write about what gives you joy. Writing should be a pleasure, not a chore. If you don't enjoy writing it, chances are, your readers won't enjoy reading it either. You should also keep at it. There are some days when you may not feel like putting pen to paper. But don't give up on your ideas or your writing because of a few bad days. Most importantly, get some people to read your draft and be open to suggestions and constructive criticism. But you should also be aware of the difference between baseless criticism and constructive criticism. Ignore the former and embrace the latter.

Currently I am working on a multi POV book on the Mahabharata. Some of the survivors of the war look back on their lives. It is planned as a four book series.
