Most of the ideas for plot and progression have come through asking myself one question. "What if...?" While solving mysteries, answering questions, and resolving the story, I take a step back and ask this question. In the two epilogues of each my books, for example, I take my perfectly ended book and throw a wrench into the works. This leaves the reader to try to figure out why a certain character acted like they did, and want to read more to find out the answer. It also gives me a chance to stretch my imagination and rewrite the next phase of the story.
