I love seeing words pour out on the page—running from my brain, down to my fingers, and onto the computer screen. I also enjoy revising--taking a rough draft and polishing it over and over until it shines. Of course, seeing your books on a store shelf, in a library, or in the hands of a reader is pretty cool, too!

Inspiration is everywhere. I find inspiration while taking a walk, bobbing in the ocean, reading a good book, eavesdropping on conversations, watching kids play, remembering special times and events, and on and on and on. Be open to inspiration and it will find you!

Do plumbers get plumber’s block? Do bus drivers get bus driver’s block? Do teachers get teacher’s block? No, of course not. They show up and do their work every day. That’s what writers have to do, too. It's true that some days words flow, and some days it takes lots of work just to write a sentence, but don’t fall into the writer’s block excuse zone. Show up each day and do your writing work!

Read--The more you read, the better writer you will become.
Write--Do it! Don't just talk about it--write, and write, and write some more!

I always have lots of books in various stages of the writing process. I have several non-fiction picture books in process, as well as fictional ones. I am nearly finished with a middle grade novel about a kid who wants to be a Safety Patrol at school, but encounters real-life pirates at his school. I'm also working on a historical fiction middle grade novel based on kids being forced out of school for medical reasons back in the 1980s.

The idea for OUTER SPACE BEDTIME RACE didn't come from just one place. I knew that I wanted to write a bedtime book that my great nephew Jack would love--not pink and frilly, not princess-y, but full of action and maybe even a bit spooky. So I tried one of my favorite ways to generate writing ideas--a mash-up. A mash-up forces together unlikely things to create something new. I ended up mashing together aliens, a race, and a bedtime story. That's how OUTER SPACE BEDTIME RACE came to be--and Jack loves it!
