We were studying abolition in history and there were a few characters that were really interesting to me. And as the thoughts began to marinate in my mind, I did a search on thoroughbred racing here in the States. One of my favorite books that I read to my kids was Marguerite Henry's 'King of the Wind'. I've never forgotten the story of Sham and his pal, Grimalkin. And since I'm super partial to Arabs, the story just exploded in my head. It's really important to me that the romance isn't front and center. The character's relationship with God has to be. So... 'The Way Home' was born.

Often times, inspiration comes from what I hear or read. I love music and some of my books were inspired by songs I heard. One of my books, 'Rescuing the Weak' came about because of something my son said and it just wouldn't leave me alone.

I'm in the rewriting stages of two books, actually, both of which will come out later on this year. One is a historical fiction, which allowed me to combine my love for horses with my adoration for history. The other is the final installation of the 'Royal Skater Chronicles', a bitter-sweet process.

Don't try to do it alone. Surround yourself with other authors who help you become better at the craft. If you're self-published, know that you are going to work twice as hard as anyone else and that your books will only go so far as you reach out. It is hard work. But it's so worth it.

The best thing is that I get to make up stories and write them down. I've always been a bit of a dreamer and this is a great outlet for my thoughts. I love making up stories with flawed characters, who have something to surrender.

Usually, I have to read something of my favorite three authors, Ronnie Kendig, Dani Pettrey, or Tessa Afshar. Their writing helps me get out of my own head and calms me down, allowing me to focus back on my own work. I also do a lot of praying and reading scriptures. That usually gives me direction.
