I'm listening to your book and have wondered how you perceive the current US government's behavior? I'm sure this is not the place to answer this question in depth, but I can't help thinking about the similarities between how the Russians treated your family and other Germans and how our government has decided to treat many groups in the US. Excellent book, you've brought history alive, close up and personal.
Nina Willner Great question. My short answer is this. When the leader (and party and cabinet) of a nation tries to circumvent a just rule of law, lies, scapegoats, gaslights and manipulates to further their aims, and that leader has an aggressive, unapologetic need to be revered especially at the cost of the health, success and welfare of the people of that nation, if empathy and compassion is lacking, then we're not dealing with a democracy, and we should ask ourselves how did we get here. I believe it starts at home teaching humanity, embracing diversity and moral decency and at school, teaching history, civics, rule of law and equal rights. Hello, I just finished the audio version of "Forty Autumns". Very good! I wondered if you showed the picture of Cordilla in her USA bought swimming suit while standing with the East German team that appeared in the newspaper? I loved the thought and missed out possibly because I listened to the book. If this picture is available, could you please share? Thanks. Lorrie

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Nina Willner I think writer's block is nature's way of telling a writer s/he needs to step away - either because something needs to float a bit in your head before settling, or simply because the writer needs a palate cleanser. WB is a sign I need to turn my focus to something completely different - work on another part of the manuscript or go for a good run. Eventually nearly always clarity comes. I don't stress it. I just move on to something else and trust that the answers will come organically when they're ready.
