Sara asked Nina Willner:

I'm listening to your book and have wondered how you perceive the current US government's behavior? I'm sure this is not the place to answer this question in depth, but I can't help thinking about the similarities between how the Russians treated your family and other Germans and how our government has decided to treat many groups in the US. Excellent book, you've brought history alive, close up and personal.

Nina Willner Great question. My short answer is this. When the leader (and party and cabinet) of a nation tries to circumvent a just rule of law, lies, scapegoats, gaslights and manipulates to further their aims, and that leader has an aggressive, unapologetic need to be revered especially at the cost of the health, success and welfare of the people of that nation, if empathy and compassion is lacking, then we're not dealing with a democracy, and we should ask ourselves how did we get here. I believe it starts at home teaching humanity, embracing diversity and moral decency and at school, teaching history, civics, rule of law and equal rights. Stay tuned for more on that topic in my upcoming book The Boys in the Light.
