I started to dream of becoming an author in my early twenties when I left showbiz and turned rather seriously to writing, which had previously been an on-and-off hobby. I knew for a long time that I wanted to write in some form, but I didn't know it would be children's books until I sat down to write novel-length work and found I really loved working on stories that portrayed the world through a young person's eyes.
I usually turn to other authors' work for inspiration. In terms of literature, I used to read a lot of Haruki Murakami and Shirley Jackson when I was writing, and now I read Rebecca Stead and Erin Entrada Kelly and watch great shows about young people, like the new Babysitters Club series. That gets me into the headspace I need to write.

The best thing about being a writer is that moment I read something I've written and worked on and edited and re-edited and think, "This is what I meant to say." There's an incredible satisfaction in that moment. More specifically, as a novelist, the best thing is creating characters. They really do become the grown-up equivalent of your imaginary friends on the playground.

I'm currently at work on my second middle grade novel. It deals with that time in our tweens in which physical appearance suddenly becomes a defining factor in our identity in a whole new way. A big challenge of growing up is learning that only you can truly define your own identity. I hope to tap into that in this story!

My advice to aspiring writers is this: Persist, persist, persist. You have a story to tell, or a poem to write, that no one else can write in the way that you can, and someone out there will connect with it. Keep writing and keep submitting and don't look back!
