katie asked Brigit Young:

How long have you wanted to be an author? Also, what inspired you most throughout your career?

Brigit Young I started to dream of becoming an author in my early twenties when I left showbiz and turned rather seriously to writing, which had previously been an on-and-off hobby. I knew for a long time that I wanted to write in some form, but I didn't know it would be children's books until I sat down to write novel-length work and found I really loved working on stories that portrayed the world through a young person's eyes.
I usually turn to other authors' work for inspiration. In terms of literature, I used to read a lot of Haruki Murakami and Shirley Jackson when I was writing, and now I read Rebecca Stead and Erin Entrada Kelly and watch great shows about young people, like the new Babysitters Club series. That gets me into the headspace I need to write.
