Yes! The next book will solve the mystery of where Willow keeps disappearing to, with some angsting from Ian and the rest of the friend group. If the first two books do well enough, maybe I'll get to write stories for some of the other friends, too... but we'll see! Publishing is fickle that way. Thank you for reading AFU!

Ahh, what a lovely thing to wake up to this morning! Thank you! I LOVED getting to write this short story. I prefer to leave things open-ended for readers to imagine their own way, but I think it's pretty safe to say that an ideal Jim future involves eventually getting his own ship and making his own way in the universe, free to be his own man. I don't think a pirate's life ultimately jives with him (too violent), nor the Royal Navy (too restrictive).
I would absolutely be down for writing a full-length twist on Treasure Planet, but I doubt it'll happen; Treasure Planet the movie isn't very well-known, so I'm not sure they'd be willing to do it. If they ever ask, though, my answer is yes! Thanks again for this. <3

This question is years old at this point, but figured I'd answer anyway! You can always see what's coming up next at www.mkengland.com/writing or by signing up for my newsletter at mkengland.substack.com. At this very moment, I'm about to go out on submission to publishers with an adult cozy fantasy!

As of right now, no—I love that world and those characters, but SPELLHACKER was written to be a standalone novel. It's so visual though, I'd love to see it on screen, as a graphic novel, or interactive fiction one day! You can see www.mkengland.com/writing for some of my other novels. Thanks for reading. ♥

I'm so glad you loved Spellhacker! I'm always so delighted when that book finds more readers. I actually just had another YA come out in 2022, but it was a queer contemporary romance under a slightly different name: The One True Me & You, written as Remi K. England! I hope to write more YA, but we'll have to see if the publishers are willing to bite. ** IN THE MEANTIME THOUGH! I *am* releasing an interactive YA sci-fi novel on storyloom! It's called His Forbidden Prince, and you can play it for free right now at Storyloom.com. Just click on "All Stories" and scroll until you see His Forbidden Prince. Thanks for asking!

Great question! I definitely will. Keep an eye on my social media (@mk_england on instagram and twitter). Maybe I'll do it as part of a holiday or new year thing! Thanks for reminding me that little story exists.

Bwahahaha, hilarious question! I feel like Nax has the potential to make most situations worse with his very presence, because he's a bit of a chaos magnet. That said, I'm gonna say Asra, because she is always the clever idea person who loves to egg people on. I feel like she and Remi would be A Force.
From a pure character standpoint, though, I think throwing ultra diplomat Rion into the mix might be fun because he would try to "handle" Diz and she would REBEL SUPER HARD.

Ack, I love them all, how can I choooooose? I think in THE DISASTERS, as much as I adore Nax and love writing from his POV, Asra is the one who really shines for me in the book. I love her spark of mischief and her fierce dedication to fighting for what she believes in.
In SPELLHACKER, Remi's total fannish enthusiasm for life, science, and their favorite music and such is such a joy. I want to channel their attitude in my own life!

Great question! Basically everything I've written since SPELLHACKER has been in a different genre and age category—middle grade, chapter books, picture books, and adult, contemp, mystery, romance—but I am desperately itching to get back to my YA SFF roots with my next project. I hope to have a really varied career, but I do think that queer YA SFF will always be my home base!

Not as of right now! :( :( :( I do have a sequel completely plotted out and ready to write, but the publisher has to think it's worth it to publish it. If it's something you want, let HarperTeen know, or recommend The Disasters to others! The more people who read it, the more likely we'll be able to do a sequel. <3

All my books start as a tiny idea that sits in a google doc for months or years until something comes along to set it on fire. In this case, the fire-starter was Guardians of the Galaxy. Something about the tone of that movie lit up my brain and gave me Nax's voice!
Dinner with any character... I love everyone in the main cast too much to choose between them (seriously though can you imagine an amazing friendsgiving-style dinner with them?), but about halfway through the book you meet two characters who I think would have a fascinating story of their own. One is a ship mechanic, and the other is a spoiler. ;) You'll know them when you see them!

Ahhh, I can't say much just yet, but I can't wait to reveal the title! The book is a sci-fi/fantasy mashup (magic in a futuristic world) featuring another ensemble cast I love to pieces. It'll be similar to THE DISASTERS in pacing and humor, but a bit more emotionally intense IMO. I hope y'all enjoy it!
