There's so much disappointment and struggle in this businesses, especially if you have lofty goals. I think if you write to explore, understand, create and process, you will be happy no matter what ends up happening with your writing.

My writing bounces around from essays to short stories to novels. Right now I'm working on a thing that started as a short story but has already ballooned into 12,000 words. The story is set in my current location in The Netherlands, and even if the story never sees the light of day, it has really helped me transition and adapt to this new place.

I attended a community writing group at my local bookstore. The group leader asked us to write our first memory. I wrote my memory but came up with an alternative character name and fudged details I couldn't remember. That was the moment my future main character, Meri, entered the world. Though I didn't end up using that early bit of writing in the book, I will be forever grateful to that group for awakening that first glimmer of story.
