Oh, I'm not sure. The story itself first came to life after I watched two movies back to back: THE HUNGER GAMES and LORD OF THE RINGS. I never set out to write about a quest for magic, but I do know my characters were searching for *something*, and magic turned out to be it!

Oh my. I have too many favorites! One of my favorites has to be: "Who decides what’s out of reach, if not we ourselves?" and another: “Be as victorious as the name I have given you and bring the desert to its knees.”

Ooo, SHADOW AND BONE, definitely! It was my first instance reading fantasy set in a world inspired by a country and culture other than England. It opened my eyes to the possibility that fantasy could exist elsewhere, too. As for a book I wish existed when I was a teen: WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI. Teens of South Asian descent dealing with an arranged marriage and remaining happy? Yes, please—that book struck very close to home!

Leigh Bardugo (forever and ever), Beth Revis (who has supported me from the start), and V.E. Schwab (who might have been asked the most naive question: how does one publish a book?)
