Write about what you know. There's nothing worse than reading a book by an author babbling about something he doesn't have a clue about. I think that is how a book about a vaccum cleaner door-to-door salesman and his adventures in the Renaissance period was written.

I sit at my laptop and the words start pouring out. Sometimes rubbish and at other times there might be one or two useful bits and pieces in the flow. If one of my characters misspoke or if I decide to change their destiny, I just hit delete and it’s like nothing ever happened.
I wish it was that easy in the real world. I wish I could just press the backspace key a few times to take back a hurtful comment that slipped from between my lips or that I can take back what I said to ruin a surprise. But alas, that's why I write fiction. To escape from the real world, to a land at the end of a rainbow.

I just remember Syria. Whenever I need inspiration, I close my eyes and imagine the characters. I see Bana sitting in the corner, braiding her hair and caressing her wounds. I hear Um Hussam ranting about a potential daughter-in-law and I watch the disappointment creep over Rami's face at the sight of his fake bride.
Most of the characters in "Syrian Brides" are based on friends and relatives back home in Aleppo.
