I truly cannot remember why, but a few years ago I wrote a little fragment of a scene where an out-of-work jester tries to perform a joke for a woman in a sedan chair (who ends up sic'ing her cheetah on him). For some reason I thought it was worth expanding on, and so I did. Slowly it grew, and all of a sudden I found myself thinking: wow. This might not end up as just a short story. I might actually have-- no, MAKE!-- time to write an entire novel.

I'm extremely easily inspired. You could probably point at a dust mote tooling by on the breeze and say "write about THAT one" and I'd do it.
But inspiration is only the start...afterward, there's that whole pesky the-rest-of-the-novel thing. Is what I'm writing as interesting to anyone else as it is to me? Or rather: did I MAKE it that interesting?

Making sure that every literate English speaker on Planet Earth falls in love with my novel. Come on! You'll be one of them! Won't you?

This is old advice, said by many writers before me and many who are better than I. But it's still true: read more, write more. To which I'll add the twist: but try and make it a little better each time.

I'm not sure I really have it— I used to write advertising copy, and lemme tell ya, if you wait around for inspiration to strike before you can bring yourself to write about the Beef Log Gift Combo, you'll be in deep deadline doo-doo.
