Daniel Thorman I often use personal experiences to spark ideas in my novels. I don't know that my life has many mysteries. I'm much more likely to latch onto something tragic or sad and try to compare it to things with which people in medieval times had to cope. I then convey through their acceptance and optimism how life goes on and we bear what we must.
Daniel Thorman I'm mostly reading the latest books from a few fellow Authors with whom I share a facebook group. I'm currently on Colby Dunn's "Crimson Sun". When writing, however, most of my time is spent obsessively editing my own novels.
Daniel Thorman I just published my third novel. My Amazon links are broken...
Daniel Thorman I would love to visit Larry Niven's Ringworld. What would I do? Likely it would not involve rishathra...
Daniel Thorman Writer's what now? What is this 'block' of which you speak?
Daniel Thorman There are many positives. I learn things with each novel I research and write. There's a certain pride telling others I am a published author. But for me, the very best thing is receiving a reader's review where they tell me my writings have made them smile. I get quite a few like this, and it always touches my heart and brightens my entire day.
Daniel Thorman Keep at it. It gets better once you have become more established. Listen to feedback from your readers. They'll tell you what they like best and what they don't like. Do your best quality work. Don't just schlep out wordcount to market more product. Your words represent you. Make your mark on the future.
Daniel Thorman As I have only just published "Calamity at Conclave", the third book in my series, I am inundated with marketing tasks, Amazon ads, mailings, getting the series entries straightened out, website updates, and so forth. I envision a five-book series as I discuss in the author's afterword. When next I can take up the pen, it'll be to outline book four.
Daniel Thorman I feed the birds each morning as I enjoy my morning coffee out on my porch. Ideas for the novels generally occur to me there.
Daniel Thorman I cover this topic a bit in my author's afterword. The story actually came about as a natural consequence of the prior novel. I wanted to portray a medieval learning institution. There wouldn't be 'classes' of students (or would there?). I also wanted to define the wizard community of Osten with examples of their various capabilities as Lucas and Royland seek progression toward Journeyman. The bubonic plague was the necromancer's way of attacking the conclave as he had promised in the epilogue of "Chaos in the Caravan".
