Kate Rhodes Hi Tarmia, nice to hear from you! You don't have to wait long for Fatal Harmony. It will be available world-wide from the end of March on Amazon. I hope you and your sister enjoy it! Thanks again for making contact; I'm so glad you're enjoying my books.
Kate Rhodes So far, it hasn't hit me. Fingers crossed it doesn't! I've had crises of confidence, but carried on writing through them I think that writing is very much like playing the violin. The more you do it, the better you get.
Kate Rhodes I have to admit that love almost all of it. I've met some great people through writing, both writers and readers. It's always lovely to have someone email me to say they've enjoyed one of my books. I don't think that feeling ever goes away. After all, I write books to entertain people. If they do, I'm thrilled.
Kate Rhodes Read widely in the genre you hope to write for. It helps to be intimately familiar with the market before you launch yourself into it. I'd also say, the books that get published are the ones that get written. So join a writing group, and write as often as you can. I think ninety percent of writing is about confidence and hard work. Most people can tell a good story. But it takes grit to keep at the chalk face day after day.
Kate Rhodes Lots of things at once! I think it's always the way, when you're writing a serial. I'm about to do a final edit on River of Souls the 4th book in my Alice Quentin series, even though it's not out until 2015. I've also sketched out the outline for Blood Symmetry, the 5th book in the series. Days are long and busy, so it's just as well I love writing these books.
Kate Rhodes That's a tough one! Newspaper and TV stories will often flick a switch in my head. My current book The Winter Foundlings features a child heroine, ten year old Ella, which has been abducted. In part her character must have been inspired by all the horribly disturbing high profile cases of child abduction which feature on TV.
Kate Rhodes Most of my books are inspired by my specific locations, and The Winter Foundlings is no exception. I stumbled across the Foundling Museum in Bloomsbury in London. It's the city's first ever orphanage, built while Charles Dickens was at the height of his fame. I found the building so disturbing and atmospheric, I had to include it in my book. The story also visits a high security mental hospital which is very similar to Broadmoor, another haunting location.
