Jim Webster I must admit I avoid reviewing authors or doing review swaps because Amazon have, at times, frowned upon the process. Also a lot of readers I've talked to don't like the process either because they feel that the reviews are pretty worthless.
Also, in all candour, my TBR pile is so large at the moment, I couldn't offer to do meaningful reviews in the next 18 months :-(
Jim Webster Why I keep ending up in dying industries and struggle to make a living ;-)
Jim Webster I believe some of them were in a Public Library in Leeds but that was because the librarian knew me.
I don't remember ever getting any money for it, but the library did get the paperbacks more cheaply than an ordinary purchaser.
Other than that, I'm afraid genuinely don't know
Jim Webster No real wisdom, I long ago came to the conclusion that a previous generation were correct and the only thing that sells books is personal recommendation. If your mate Fergie likes a book and really raves about it, you're likely to read it. If yet another advert flashes across your facebook page you'll probably barely notice it.
The trouble is this is long and slow and takes a long time to achieve anything. As you say it needs readers to produce readers.
I decided I'd start blogging seriously, so have two blogs

https://jandbvwebster.wordpress.com/

Which is about life and stuff

and

https://tallissteelyard.wordpress.com/

Which is basically a collection of Tallis Steelyard anecdotes/short stories.
So people have a chance to read my writing and see if they like it.
But waste not, want not, I bundle up the first blog to produce collections like these

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

Which actually sell as well as anything I've done

and the Tallis Steelyard stories get bundled into novella sized offerings like this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

These don't sell as well but then they cost me nothing :-)
Jim Webster I'm afraid I don't have time. I do some reviewing for a couple of popular history magazines and they keep me busy. My 'to read' pile is getting embarrassing :-(
Jim Webster Interesting.
Your predecessor asked me exactly the same question
Jim Webster probably a world of my own devising, on the grounds I know how it works :-)
What would I do, probably as little as possible and enjoy life
Jim Webster I rather gave up on the group, I got busy, and something had to give and frankly it wasn't a lot of fun, there's only so much of my life i'm willing to spend trying to talk to those who won't listen :-(
Jim Webster All sorts, 'A curious history of food and drink' by Ian Crofton, John Carr's 'The Knights Hospitaller' while I've also got Gav Thorpe's 'The path of the warrior' sitting in the heap waiting for me.
And that's always assuming I'm not going to buy something else before summer starts :-)
Jim Webster It's a tricky question, if you're talking about a romantically entwined couple, i don't think I have a favorite couple.
But if you're talking of 'double acts' I'm torn between Holmes and Watson, or Jeeves and Wooster.
Jim Webster It was an accident, I had a character in need of a story so I let him play and the book sort of emerged
Jim Webster I'm not really sure, in fact I've never explored too deeply in case I inadvertently stopped whatever it is happening
Jim Webster Tricky one that, I suddenly discovered I have three unfinished projects, sorry four unfinished projects that I ought to complete. So I'm deciding which to complete first.
Jim Webster Not to be too precious. Writing is a craft, practice it, keep writing and the more you write the better you will write.
Jim Webster It's great fun, I enjoy doing it. Not only that but I get to hand out suitable retribution to the bad guys
Jim Webster Because I am, amongst other things, a freelance journalist, writer's block isn't an issue. If I don't write, I don't earn. It concentrates the mind wonderfully :-)
