Jan Porter I love to travel within my own book world journeys where I explore the lives, thoughts and emotions of everyday unsung heroines.
Much like an artist engrossed in creating a sculpture or painting, writing is a delicious and all-encompassing mind space to wander in.
For example; in Soul Skin, I spent time pondering what it must have been like for a young woman to navigate the Nazi death camp experience and the death process, be in battle as Joan of Arc and as a tethered wolf who finds freedom. I have spent nearly a year pondering a current novel in the works where a female pilot is crash sea landing an air plane. The main character in this book is in latter years, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and so, I am pondering the slow memory loss and confusion symptoms process of the disease.
It is a fascinating journey!
Jan Porter Harold and Maude are the most intriguing and unlikely example of a nontraditional couple love affair. It has been said by many spiritual philosophers that love and companionship, or soul mates, come in many different forms. These two are definitely a step out of the Hollywood ideal box of romance norms. I like characters that the quirky aspects of my own being can relate to.
Jan Porter Book ideas, I figure come from the living of life and contemplating the human condition and of course the spirit world muses.
Jan Porter I recall as a young child, being held captivated with magical yarns of indigenous cultures, saints, mysticism and shamanism and Robert Service's tales of the north northern wilderness . As a teen I found old battered copies of Voltaire's 'Candide', Margaret Caven's 'I Heard the Owl Call My Name' and anything ancient mystical shaman which my awkward geeky adolescent soul hungered for. Inspired, I first dabbled with typewritten short stories, articles and poetry founding a funky alternative secondary school newspaper 'Cool School News'. After many years of work in Human Services, evening ferocious spiritual, quantum or philosophical reading while raising children (all much food for character and story seeds).
During a life defining year of former vocation and other such life endings, I cocooned in my northern Ontario sanctuary, basking in nature's ambiance to begin a new chapter in my own journey. Here, I finally gave way to harvesting ancient philosophies, magic and know how and began to polish some of those numerous stories, books and course materials that had long been collecting dust in various stages of completion since childhood.
With all of the hub bub of spiritual gurus in the world, my sheroes lean toward those more authentic ideals such as; the 13 Grandmothers, my own ancestral women and all of those who vision global community sharing of all that is good in life. I admire all of the unknown authentic unsung heroes such as my former social services clients and acquaintances, my medicine woman daughter and son who all live a life less ordinary, comfortable in their own funky soul skin and happy to share what they have. While I would love to retire to a life of affluent luxury, I find there is still so much more to do, to share, to explore and to discover.
Jan Porter I have many projects on the go simultaneously:
1. "Spiritual Biz" the gist blurb is about finding fulfillment and doing business with integrity within glocal community marketplace and making inspired legacy changes.
2. "Izzy's Ghosts" a novel in the works, sorry - no hints yet, I will share some soon.
3. a handful of children's books are in various stages of completion.
Jan Porter Writing is a fabulously delicious way to experience, explore and journey other lives and differing perspectives. I figure that the majority of what I write comes from spirit world muses, so feel awkward at times in accepting credit for what they are dictating. While writing I am in a totally unique mind and soul space of communing and so most often have little recall of what has been written until I read it. It is a joyful flow sensation experience that often surprises even me.
Jan Porter Writer's block? rarely happens but hmmm... when it does, I assume that I just need a change of activity or change of scenery. I always have many writing projects, creative projects on the go simultaneously. Creative writing inspiration typically flows when I am driving. sometimes when I feel stuck, I simply tune into the muses and ask what is next.
Jan Porter Everyone has a story, just write from your heart and soul then edit last.
