Carl couldn't end the call even though no one would pick up. The sickeningly sweet hold muzak played a repeating fifteen-second loop for the rest of the eternity.

I guess the answer to that question depends on what you mean. If you're talking about making money, it's probably romance and related sub-genres such as romantic suspense and paranormal romance. Romance readers are voracious and numerous. So, if popularity and money is your aim something in those genres will always work.
Obviously, there's the question of writing what you love and writing you want and sometimes successful writers can ride trends and slightly tweak their ideas to fit into the genre of the moment and that's going to vary moment to moment.

To me, writer's block is usually like being lost and what you should do when you're lost is go back and find where you made the wrong turn. Usually, I'll go back over my work and find out where I made a mistake as that usually is the cause of writer's block: me writing myself into a corner. Sometimes, I'll find I just need to read over the material, capture where I'm at and find my story.
