I guess the answer to that question depends on what you mean. If you're talking about making money, it's probably romance and related sub-genres such as romantic suspense and paranormal romance. Romance readers are voracious and numerous. So, if popularity and money is your aim something in those genres will always work.
Obviously, there's the question of writing what you love and writing you want and sometimes successful writers can ride trends and slightly tweak their ideas to fit into the genre of the moment and that's going to vary moment to moment.
