Thanks for the question. I served as a combat engineer in the Iowa Army National Guard starting in 1999. In 2004, I was among the men from my unit who were activated for federal duty to serve in Afghanistan, and I served in Afghanistan from June 2004—May 2005. While deployed to Afghanistan, I was, technically in the regular active duty Army.

Alas, THE LAST FULL MEASURE is the end of the line for the DIVIDED WE FALL books. It's too bad, really. I truly enjoyed working on those books. Those were good times.

Thanks for reading THE LAST FULL MEASURE. You ask a good question. I was purposefully vague about the years in which the DIVIDED WE FALL trilogy takes place. However all the date references in the books are correct relative to one another. So some readers have figured out, based when it all takes place. In the end, I'm not sure the exact date matters, because unfortunately, the series seems more and more likely to happen in real life. Thanks again for reading. I wish you the best.

You ask about the books being made into a movie. There has been some interest in making the books into a TV series, but I'll be honest, I think more people need to know about the books for that to happen.
You ask about my inspiration for DIVIDED WE FALL. This was a strange case. The idea for the border between Idaho and Washington state being closed due to military blockade came early to me, and I thought about a young Guardsman ordered to keep watch on the border to prevent crossings. Then I had to fill in all the "why." Why is the border closed? Why is the young man on duty? And I started writing the book right away.

Right now, my newest novel GAMER ARMY is available at Scholastic Book Fairs and Clubs, and will be available in bookstores in hardcover on November 27th. If you liked DIVIDED WE FALL, I think you will also really enjoy GAMER ARMY. I had so much fun writing that book.

Thanks for reading IF YOU'RE READING THIS, Simone, and thanks for your question. IF YOU'RE READING THIS is inspired by a lot of different parts of my life. Mike's father, Sergeant Mark Wilson, wrote letters from a tour in the war in Afghanistan that was a lot like the tour I served in Afghanistan, with many of the dates and missions taken right out of my notebooks from the war. Some of the parental advice Mike's father passes along is advice I would have given, or words of wisdom my father gave me. Mike's experiences in football mirror my own, except that he was actually good at football. And Mike's letter to his late father at the end of the book was mostly a letter from me to my late father.
