I spent some years working near Gower Street in London, the setting for the first part of my latest book, The Philosopher's Daughters. Then I visited the Northern Territory in Australia - a place that in the 1890s, when the novel is set, was at the 'frontier' of European settlement. The two places became connected in my mind, and subsequently in my novel.

When I'm feeling blocked on one part of a book, I have 3 strategies. One is to take time off and go for a walk, another is to work on the unblocked part of the manuscript, and the third is to preempt blockage by making a note to myself at the end of any writing session about what I plan to do when I pick up pen again.
