Goodreads asked Alison Booth:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Alison Booth I spent some years working near Gower Street in London, the setting for the first part of my latest book, The Philosopher's Daughters. Then I visited the Northern Territory in Australia - a place that in the 1890s, when the novel is set, was at the 'frontier' of European settlement. The two places became connected in my mind, and subsequently in my novel.
