Blessed Are the Weird happened several years ago when I was going through a rough patch. During that time, I allowed myself to really face how out of place I had always felt. I wrote this little verse, "Blessed are the weird people... Poets, misfits, writers, mystics, heretics, painters, and troubadours for they teach us to see the world through different eyes."
Later I shared it on Facebook and it just took off. It got shared millions of times and has popped up all over the place. People made their own versions. I realized that this was an idea that tied together a lot of what I had been trying to say for years. So I wrote the book. It took about six drafts and three years--way too long.

Music, nature, and real conversation. My imagination is always running around but if I get into a funk, taking a long hike along a mountain stream will usually shake things loose. I love my own company, but I often find that talking with smart, inspiring people is a huge catalyst when I'm slogging along.

I just finished working over Blessed Are the Weird. That took fucking forever. I am excited to go back to writing stories. I have two novels that have been waiting around to crawl back down from the attic. One is The Cosmic Compass. It deals with intuition and past lives and all sorts of magic. The other is Lilith's Innocence. I won't talk about that one much because it hasn't fully shown itself and I don't like to spook a shy story.

Don't do it unless you can't not do it.

I love that I can slow down time. It's like having a super power. When I write, I am forced to revisit old feelings, new feelings... remember experiences. Feel them again.
Writing makes me feel life--my life, all life.

I always ask myself, "what am I afraid of here?"
Because writer's block is just another name for fear. Also, I recently read something that is seriously true.
"You can't think your way out of a writing block. You can only write your way out of a thinking block."
That helps but sometimes the only thing for it is to go take a hike in the hills near my house. Or talk to a friend who makes me laugh. Something about that kind of conversation always lights up my imagination.
