How are you doing lately? Any update on the 4th Baru book?

Seth Dickinson I worked on it a lot and then I stopped. I will work on it again. No timetable yet though.

I picked up Traitor Baru Cormorant after learning you wrote a lot of the Destiny lore. I am devastated. In the best kind of way. I greatly underestimated how true that first line, "You will know because it hurts" would be true. I need a break, but will eventually finish the whole trilogy. I love it already. I certainly hope you don't get angry fans wishing the series would play out in a more conventional way?

Seth Dickinson There have been enough angry people to leave a mark. If I had a button to press that would unpublish the books I would've pressed it a few times in the last nine years.

Hi, Seth. I was reading through the grimoire anthologies and realised you were the first to bring up the final shape as a concept in the the books of sorrow. So it got me wondering, was the final shape already floating around the writers room before that or was it something you invented for the taken king? And if so, what was your original idea of what the final shape would be?

Seth Dickinson There was no writer's room. It was just a concept I found compelling, both in the context of Destiny's cosmology and broader ideas about the tyranny of adaptive fitness as a bottleneck on creating morally good systems.

Hi Seth, I found and loved the Cormorant series through the Blue Planet. A wonderful mod to a wonderful game, which I enjoyed playing so much that my googling about it led me to your books. Of course finishing one series is quite a bit of work as it is, but I do wonder if you had any thoughts on returning to science fiction one day?

Seth Dickinson I love to meet a Blue Planet fan! I am doing more science fiction, my next book is science fiction. It is not Blue Planet though.

Hi Seth, hope you're doing well! I loved the third Baru book, and am of course so excited to see how it all ends, but I actually wanted to ask about Exordia: is there any update on when that's coming out? Because I have to admit, a novel-length non-Destiny sci-fi story from you sounds like an incredible pitch by itself. (That said I hope Bungie ask you back for Witch Queen/post-WQ content!)

Seth Dickinson I don't know what is happening with Exordia. It's with the publisher. I wish I had more information, sorry :(

Not a question, but I hadn't found another way to contact you, since your Twitter account is deleted. And apparently I can't even submit this unless it contains a question mark, which wow? Reading the Acknowledgements at the end of Tyrant, it seems like you are struggling. I get that, and I was moved to say that here is someone who cares very deeply about the stories you are telling. Please don't give up.

Can you share some insight into your writing process?

Seth Dickinson I wrestle a lot with depression and believing my writing is worthless/disposable. This didn't used to be a problem for me; I was a really fast, productive writer with a lot of confidence. I wish I could go back.

Seth Dickinson Four books in the complete series. If it's any more than four something's gone terribly wrong.
