Hi Paul. Sorry I missed this!
Woom had been sitting at around 180 reviews for about five years before it went viral, so I can't speak to that, aside from word of mouth being key. Before that, Ghostland did (and has done) quite well for me. That was due to a solid campaign of marketing including great cover art, a "viral" series of blog posts, and a website devoted entirely to the book.
Good luck with your journey!

Thanks for the question! The Brazen bull is pretty wild, I heard about it a while back. I'm not sure which I'd pick, I'd be likelier to make something up at this point, unless I had something specific in mind. I've done crucifixion and a method called "the boats." Maybe Iron Maiden would be fun, because of the band and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Hey Mitlos! Sorry I missed this, and thanks for asking! My latest novel (GROSS OUT) is set partly in the Lonely Motel, with a return of Shyla and Angel. I plan to write more sporadically over the next couple of years, though I'm not sure if there will be an origin story for some time.

lol this is great! Sorry I didn't see this question earlier. I think novellas are a good place to start and that sounds like a great idea for one. Good luck with it!

Thanks for the question, Larry! Sorry I missed this. Some of the best books I've read in the past few years are David Mitchell's Slade House, Jeff Strand's Pressure, and Owl Goingback's Tribal Screams. It takes a lot to scare me but these ones really impressed me.

Hi Vonda! Thanks for asking, and sorry I didn't catch this earlier.
To answer your question, I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. If you like short stories, give VIDEO NASTIES a try. If you're into ghosts, either GHOSTLAND or SALVAGE might do the trick. If you like fast-paced horror thrillers, THE METHOD or THE MIDWIVES. Whichever you choose, I hope you enjoy it!

I'd go to Castle Rock - first stop, a drink at the Mellow Tiger.

Thanks for the question, Thomas!
There are a lot of things that made me cringe to write them, and continue to make me shudder when I read them now. But I suppose the worst offenders have to be 1) a scene of graphic self-mutilation in GRISTLE & BONE, and 2) pretty much all of "Cuttings" from the forthcoming THE BLACK ROOM MANUSCRIPTS.
I tend to ick myself out a lot, though.
