Woom had been sitting at around 180 reviews for about five years before it went viral, so I can't speak to that, aside from word of mouth being key. Before that, Ghostland did (and has done) quite well for me. That was due to a solid campaign of marketing including great cover art, a "viral" series of blog posts, and a website devoted entirely to the book.

Reading Woom now. I find it a delightful romp for the whole family to enjoy. My 95 year old memaw seems to love it. She is glued to her chair I mean she hasn't moved for like 5 days now so I assume she loves it. Any advice for novice wannabe writers like me? I am going to self publish a romance between A Qanon follower and a Flat Earther but that is just for fun. Do you think novellas are the best way to start?

If you could have any torture device in one of your stories what would it be and why? Mine would be some variation of the Brazen bull, something like a Minotaur, so it stands up like an Iron Maiden, if that makes sense. Kind of like a Wicker Man now I think of it. I like the idea of the sounds someone makes while they struggle to breath, while slowly roasting alive inside the Brazen bull, or Minotaur.
