I just found this question! Please forgive me for taking so long to answer, keeping up with Goodreads and Amazon is not my strong suit.
Yes, the town was a composite of several small towns in South Alabama, as well as things from my imagination that were needed for the story. I really couldn't talk about the Wiregrass region and not talk about helicopters, especially since the story takes place in 1968. I hope you enjoyed reading it. I haven't experienced a true block yet. Sometimes, I just need to stop and take a break, but most of the time I know exactly what I want to write.

I think most authors, especially Southern ones, write about people, places, and events that have special meaning to them.

Don't wait to the right time and the right place. Start writing, even if it is just ideas to include in the story. There will be plenty of time to edit and polish later.
