Rejoice Denhere My childhood best friend disappeared from my life without a trace. She and her family had emigrated abroad a few years earlier but we had maintained regular contact phone and letters. There was no email back then.

I became concerned when she didn’t reply to my letters. Calls were not answered either. In fact, all efforts to contact my friend, even through her family were fruitless. They did not respond to any communication and nobody seemed to know what had become of them. It was a nightmare that haunted me for decades as I feared the worst.

Then one day, out of the blue I remembered she’d had a sister who lived in a neighbouring country to mine. I remembered her name and googled her. Thank God for Google because that didn’t exist when I was growing up.

The name came up on Google with a Facebook profile but I wasn’t sure it was my friend’s sister. So many decades had passed. She would have married, changed her name, moved abroad. I took a chance anyway and contacted her via Facebook. I also provided my email address, but did not really expect a response.

Well, I got the surprise of my life. She replied. Not only was she my friend’s sister, she remembered me! She sounded pleased to hear from me. I was thrilled. I emailed back asking about her sister and her family. I had so many questions. Now, the mystery that had been haunting me for years, the nightmare I had lived would be over.

Then she too disappeared. Without a trace.

Now I am wondering, maybe it wasn’t her sister after all. Maybe it was some stranger just playing with my emotions. Yes, maybe that’s what it was.

So, the mystery of my friend’s disappearance remains as I still don’t know what happened to her or her family.
