Dave Riese grew up in Massachusetts and attended Bates College in Maine, majoring in English literature. During his junior year, he studied at Oxford University.

After serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, Riese worked at several Boston area companies in computer programming for forty years.

Upon retirement in 2012, he had a long talk with himself: “If you want to publish a book, you’d better take writing seriously.” He subsequently wrote Echo from Mount Royal, a novel about a young woman’s strange courtship in 1951 Montreal.

He and his wife live north of Boston.

If I don't write for several days, I begin to doubt my abilities and my normal, cheerful disposition suffers. Writing allows me to 'zone out' of the real world and enter the realm of creativity for several hours. It's a powerful feeling to live with characters and to be surprised by their taking on lives of their own. At the end of the day, the feeling of accomplishment is wonderful.

Of course, there are days when the writing doesn't seem to go well, but I've learned over time that waiting a day to reread the previous day's output proves that one's work is never as bad as one imagines it..(less)

The British naval adventures of the two men play out against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. Over the course of the series, we read about the respect they have for one and other, the way their individual talents complement each other, and the disagreements that crop up between friends. I am ready to start reading the last volume and look forward to visiting these characters who are as real as any couple in literature.(less)

Screenplay for The Blue Dress

When I decided to try writing a screenplay, I wanted to begin with a small project. I chose one of my short stories called The Blue Dress. The screenplay is about 20 minutes. Most of the action takes place in one house (exterior, bedroom, … Continue reading →

“A writer is a dangerous friend. Everything you say, all of your life and experience, is fodder for our writing. We mean you no harm, but what you know and what you’ve done is unavoidably fascinating to us. Being friends with a writer is a bit like trying to keep a bear as a pet. They’re wonderful, friendly creatures, but they play rough and they don’t know their own strength or remember that they have claws. Choose the stories you tell to your writer friends carefully.”
