Getting My Sass in Gear!

Once Upon A Fabulous Time... by R.M. Gauthier

I’m ready to rock n’ roll, packin’ pulp fiction and nonfiction for a massive book signing event with 49 other local authors. Having received a gracious invitation to participate in the 3rd annual “Book Lovers Author Expo” hosted by the Cumberland Public Library on Saturday, February 17th, 1-4 PM EST, preparations are underway.

My “sass” is in gear for keeping things manageable—and real! Although you’re apt to find me greeting patrons of the literary arts wearing my signature-signing leopard attire, I don’t cart in bling—high-rise book posters, decorative lights, lamps, giveaway gadgetry, etc.—all of which strike me as pathetic ploys to get noticed.

Books should speak for themselves! What a novel idea, eh?

Getting my sass in gear is all about adhering to the KISS method: keep it simple, stupid! That said, this is the stuff I roll with, self-contained inside my cart, to an author event:

Boxes containing just enough books cuz you’ll be lucky to sell one, if any at all—10 - '100 Wild Mushrooms: Memoirs of the ‘60s' because they’re lightweight at 230 pgs.; 5 each - 'An Enlightening Quiche' and 'Once Upon a Fabulous Time' because each book is a heavyweight, over 500 pgs. Inside each book, I’ve enclosed a book card.

I’m carting three different kinds of signing pens corresponding with titles and totals. From past experience, I’ve learned to keep these undercover, as some folks think nothing of helping themselves to a pen without feigning the slightest interest in my books.

Acrylic easels to display each book title: Sticking out of each title, a black oak tag bookmark with a typewritten price tag adhered; a larger easel for displaying my author photo and tagline: Eva Pasco – Rhode Island Author - Incorporating historic landmarks, geographic entities, cherished institutions, and regional culture.

Takeaway Flyers with pertinent information about my books, buying links, and websites.

A plastic container with individually wrapped candies. This has potential to give pause for engaging with someone standing in front of me.
Seeing I have no interest in getting a Square Credit Card Reader, and deal strictly in cash, I am prepared to make change.

Even though refreshments will be provided, I won’t leave home without snacks and bottled water. In for the long haul, I’ll have a few sharpened pencils and crossword puzzle books to keep myself occupied.

Getting one’s sass in gear is by no means a precursor to book sales. However, it does enable me to move through crowds and set up shop with the greatest of ease.

Eva’s Byte #400 – Ready or Not?

Whether we’re ready or not, the New Year is heading our way.

Self-reliant, while hoping for the best, I try to prepare for the worst. I don’t put off till tomorrow what can get done today. Let me assure you, I pivot from these two principles out of necessity rather than self-righteousness, thanks to Murphy’s Law. You know it well, I’m sure—anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

For instance: Preparing for “the worst storm in a generation” which made landfall on December 23rd in my neck of the woods, I backed into my parking space, same as I would whenever there’s a forecast for inclement weather. Never thinking I’d have reason to drive in the pouring rain with wind gusts up to 70 mph—sure enough, Murphy’s Law struck. So, I took off like a bat out of hell to tend a matter of importance that couldn’t be put off till tomorrow.

In my zeal to hope for the best while preparing for the worst, I’ll be scheduling a routine maintenance appointment at the dealership for my vehicle in the New Year.

In my capacity as a writer, I’m drafting chapter 25 ( 759 words thus far) of my Contemporary work in progress, hoping for the best as I approach its finish line.

*Ready or not, may each of us brave any unforeseen elements in the New Year with resolve.

My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.

Eva’s Byte #514 – Psychological Spring

Purportedly, astronomers state our spring season starts on March 20th in all time zones of North America. To be exact, 5:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

Even though winter weather persists—for instance, on Sunday, March 2nd, the temperature was a blustery 29 degrees—I’ve embarked on Psychological Spring:

I’m steamrolling through spring cleaning.

My leprechaun gnomes are on display in full force.

This week, my vehicle had its spring tune-up. When I drove away from the dealership, the clock had sprung one hour ahead in psychological preparedness for advancing time on March 9th.

In the capacity of a writer, I’m psychologically springing ahead with drafting chapter 11 (449 words thus far) along my Contemporary work in progress.

*May each of us spring forward with a psychological edge.

My sincere appreciation to you for reading this far.
