Eva’s Byte #298 – Integrity

Merriam-Webster’s primary definition of integrity - 1: firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: incorruptibility.

From my perspective, this holds true even more so when your code of ethics is at odds with the popular opinion; when you take a stand that puts your own well-being in jeopardy ; when you run the risk of finding yourself ostracized and on the outside looking in.

Whether you’re navigating the minefield of a schoolyard at recess, or negotiating a government session, your integrity is at stake to be true to yourself and do the right thing, while keeping the greater good in mind.

It’s not about reaping perks or praise.

Heaven knows, my parents drummed this ideal into my head. If that wasn’t enough, there were plenty of shows during the Sixties which extolled integrity. Such as: Leave it to Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show, The Rifleman, and Lassie.

This week, in the capacity of a writer, drafting Chapter 63, Part 3 of my Contemporary work in progress, I thought I’d pull a fast one. In a nutshell, without getting into spoilers, my protagonist was about to engage in duplicitous behavior at the behest of a friend who badgered her to do so. Originally, out of compassion, she was going along with all phases of his plan. Somewhere in the midst of writing this scene, she forbade me to follow through because of the integrity I had instilled in her to begin with.

Like the noble characters we create, those possessing integrity don’t bend with prevailing winds, or succumb to pressure. They stand tall in the face of opposition.

*May each of us stay true to ourselves in a world full of contradictions.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.
