Launch events start in Aberystwyth on Thursday 10th, 6.30pm at Waterstone's. I'm then on from the to the British Library in London, up to Glasgow, then back down via Bath and Bristol.

Eyes down
Recently back from a tour of launch events with Granta.
Many thanks to all who came along, and to the staff at the various venues who made the events such a joy to do.
Sun out as it is, I'm head down working on one of these:
New Stories from the Mabinogion

FLIP/FLUPP
Just returned from a brief trip to Brazil with Granta Magazine and the British Council.
Two extraordinary and contrasting events. FLIP - a literature festival in Paraty (said Par-a-chee) a few hours south of Rio; and FLUPP , in a police protected Favella in Rio.
On the back of the Granta 119: Britain issue, we were out to discuss ideas of national v. universal identity in writing, and to celebrate Granta's Best of Brazilian Young Novelists issue.
Here's a little more information.
I now have to finalise the work on the Mabinogion commission. Come August, I'm looking forward to some sleep.

Summed up.
2012 has been quite a year for me. I'd been saying for a while I'd wait until I was happy with the writing I was doing before poking my head above the parapet too deliberately. And at the beginning of this year that writing happened.
Granta Magazine picked me up for their Britain issue, and things went from there.
Quickly on the back of finishing The Dig, I wrote the very different Bird, Blood, Snow, which reminded me not to cement myself into a way of working too self-consciously. That came out in October.
And the year has closed with a publication deal. But that's mostly secret, at the moment.
Best wishes to all of you, and thanks for the support since I got here a few months ago.
Happy new year.

Short pieces
At the beginning of June I looked over the final proof pages of "The Dig", the next novel.
This week the jacket proofs came in.
Official publication: January 16th, 2014.
Meanwhile, if you missed them, here's some links to short pieces.
Aberarth - a short story about erosion.
There are also appurtenant notes and sketches to the story here.
Milk - micro fiction in The Lampeter Review

The Dig
Whenever I talk to reading groups, audiences, people are amazed how long it takes for a book to go from "being written" to the shelf of a shop.
Well. Not long to go. THE DIG is now available to pre-order, with an official publication date 16th January '14.
While you're waiting, I strongly suggest you read A MEAL IN WINTER - a quiet, resounding book I wish I could read again for the first time.

The Dig now available
"Tense, tough and haunting" (Joe Dunthorne) and "winningly sparse" (Literary Review), The Dig tells the story of a farmer struggling through lambing time and his collision with a badger baiter.

Prize Win and Backlist Relaunch
Alongside seven other books, THE DIG was chosen as one of this year's Jerwood Fiction Uncovered winners.
It's great company to be keeping, with writers including Naomi Wood, Gerard Woodward and Evie Wyld on the list. I'm looking forward to a summer reading through the fellow winners.
The prize is great timing, as Granta Books, working alongside Parthian, have reissued the backlist with stunning new covers from designer Jenny Griggs.
