I've found a couple of tricks that work well and help me through difficult writing periods. If I'm just trying to focus multiple ideas, I'll go for a quick walk to get the creative juices flowing. It helps me work through the plot/character issues I may be facing.

For more in depth cases of writer's block, when my imaginary friends absolutely refuse to come out and play, I go to one of my favorite writing spots and delve into their lost treasures. You know, the ones hidden in the junk drawer in the kitchen, boxes in the garage, or an old shoe box on the top shelf of the closet. I mentally open the container and inventory each item answering the underlying question of why the character would save a booklet of matches, a concert ticket, or some other small trinket. That allows me to open up the backstory for the character and refocus on things I may have overlooked before.(less)

Friday Flicks: The Best Years of Our Lives

As I mentioned last week, I’ve decided to revisit some of my favorite classic films to see how they rate with regard to female representation. This week’s installment is a post WWII drama.

The Best Years of Our Lives follows the lives of three servicemen as they readjust to life after World War II. Fred, a bombardier with the Army Air Corps, Homer, a Navy amputee, and Al, a hardnosed Infantry serge

Max Lucado
“Forgive and give as if it were your last opportunity. Love like there's no tomorrow, and if tomorrow comes, love again.”
Max Lucado, Every Day Deserves a Chance: Wake Up to the Gift of 24 Hours

Milan Kundera
“Love is by definition an unmerited gift; being loved without meriting it is the very proof of real love. If a woman tells me: I love you because you're intelligent, because you're decent, because you buy me gifts, because you don't chase women, because you do the dishes, then I'm disappointed; such love seems a rather self-interested business. How much finer it is to hear: I'm crazy about you even though you're neither intelligent nor decent, even though you're a liar, an egotist, a bastard.”
Milan Kundera, Slowness

Carlos Ruiz Zafón
“Presents are made for the pleasure of who gives them, not the merits of who receives them.”
Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind

Sue Monk Kidd
“The most significant gifts are the ones most easily overlooked. Small, everyday blessings: woods, health, music, laughter, memories, books, family, friends, second chances, warm fireplaces, and all the footprints scattered throughout our days.”
Sue Monk Kidd

Cecelia Ahern
“Time cant be given. But it can be shared.”
Cecelia Ahern, The Gift
