Usually it's because I need time to work through some issue regarding Plotting. Other times it can be useful to just put the characters into a completely random situation and see what happens, or to just write anything - it's much easier to correct something that exists than it is to worry over a blank page. Talking helps too. My brother Jon (who The Fairy's Tale is dedicated to) has been a fantastic critical friend, and has helped me out of a few tight spots!(less)

I love the freedom and creativity, of course, but when I am writing I find that I think about things completely differently. I relish becoming absorbed in a book as a reader, and as a writer the experience is, paradoxically, both heightened and deepened. Heightened because I am thinking about where the plot is where it is heading to, and how I want my readers to get there; deepened because I am immersed in the world, in the characters and their lives.(less)

“I just wonder… Isn’t it better to start as a monster and become a hero? Isn’t that what creates belief? The idea that someone can change?”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale

“He started to draw. He drew from memory. He had a good memory, something which, all things considered, was far from a blessing.
The pencils moved quickly across the paper, scratching back and forth in deepening shades of grey. He leaned low over the paper, concentrating all his energy on his work.
The candles flickered and dripped wax, having nothing better to do.
Eventually he lifted his head and looked at his creation. The face of a young woman stared back at him from the paper, a slight smile playing on her lips. She looked as if she was about to say something, and that once she had you would laugh. She looked happy.
Seven stared at the picture, his strange eyes unreadable – eyes that, now he made no effort to mask them, were from edge to edge only the deep blue of the dead ocean.
He swallowed hard, as if he was trying to imbibe something foul tasting but necessary, like a child sipping medicine, and pulled another sheet of paper from his desk.”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale

“You don’t know anything about me.”
“No, I know not everything about you. But I sense enough to know you have mistaken obsession with drive, guilt with injustice. I know you want to escape what you are, cabbage fairy,” he said, reaching for his hood and gloves and tucking them into the waistband of his trousers. “Your desires are no different from my own, I simply have the courage to face them.”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale

“The Teller Cares About You.”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale

“The man, his feet tip-tapping softly on the stairs, hated it. He avoided the Index like a gambling addict avoids the tic-tac-tac of the dice table; but, like an addict, he was always, always aware of it: of the pull of the Books, and the darkness, and the silence.”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale

“Today was the introduction, and introductions were important. The girl had to meet the boy in an equal setting – if they met any other way there’d always be a question about whether it was True Love or a more financially motivated desire that awakened the passions.”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale

“Once upon a time there was war, and starvation, and death. Once upon a time we would kill our brothers and sisters, fearing for our own lives. Once upon a time the characters turned from us, and we wept. Now we do not war, nor do we fear, nor do we weep. We Redact.”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale

“It was one thing to believe in yourself, but quite another to bet.”
F. D. Lee, The Fairy's Tale
