I didn't take action, and the thoughts percolated in my mind, some I captured on paper, some became blog posts. Then in July 2016, the time was right, and I started to write the book. It had been in my mind, and I had played with ideas and mulled concepts over, I had a pretty clear picture of what I wanted to say and how I wanted to support people. As I was writing new ideas showed up, and I was able to incorporate new thinking into the book as well. The idea specifically for StoryJacking came out of a conversation I was having with my husband about our internal narratives and how to transform the stories that were not working. From that conversation, the threads of how I wanted the book to weave ideas together began to gel. (less)

I had been writing easily, and then my fears popped up, and I worried that I had just written 20000 words of garbage. I called my writing coach in a mini meltdown. He told me, "That's normal, just push through it and keep writing. We can edit out the garbage." My "must be perfect" button had triggered, and it shut down my brain. When I acknowledged it and breathed through the fear, I was able to start writing again. (less)

The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak
"I heard the author of this book, Elif Shafak, interviewed on NPR on my way to work and had to rush out and buy the book (in hardback, no less) based on her interview. It's rare to hear someone on the radio and think, "That is an amazingly interesting" Read more of this review »

“What if love and reality are big things, so big that we can only ever see a tiny bit and we think we’re seeing the whole thing, but the whole thing is so vast that there is no way from our small place in the universe to see it all? What about that? From this perspective of vastness, it may just be that we probably know next to nothing. And, we create cultural constructs of our knowledge and try and make the whole vast infinite universe fit in our tiny little boxes.”
Lyssa Danehy deHart

“As the expert in knowing yourself, you get to decide what you want to explore in your internal landscape.”
Lyssa Danehy deHart, StoryJacking: Change Your Inner Dialogue, Transform Your Life

“There is a big difference between listening to an interesting story and recognizing an important one.”
Lyssa Danehy deHart, StoryJacking: Change Your Inner Dialogue, Transform Your Life

“Hope is both the earliest and the most indispensable virtue inherent in the state of being alive. If life is to be sustained hope must remain, even where confidence is wounded, trust impaired.”
Erik H. Erikson

“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.
Delicious Ambiguity.”
Gilda Radner

“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”
Albert Einstein

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”
E.B. White

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing
and rightdoing there is a field.
I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk about.”
Rumi
