The Buddha did not want to partake of the economic surplus created by someone else. He knew that he was not contributing to it.For his food, clothing and shelter he did the following:-
1. begged for food and consumed the left overs from homes that was given to him
2. collected rags and discarded clothes from cremation grounds, washed them and then sewed them to make his robe.
3. he lived in caves, in mango groves and such places found in the wilderness.
This was how he continued his life for quite some time.
