I tend love long walks outside, in a park or another peaceful setting, to settle my mind.

Another thing that helps me write is empathy. I try to think about what other people's lives are like, what their secret dreams and hopes and ambitions are, what they're like behind closed doors. I think everyone has a story, and I try to think about what it's like to walk in another person's shoes. (less)

I also think that being a writer has helped me learn to observe other people and my surroundings more thoughtfully. It gives me the sense that everyone, every single person, has a story to tell. I think understanding that helps me see people more compassionately and with more empathy. (less)

Juan Ramón Jiménez
“If they give you ruled paper, write the other way.”
Juan Ramón Jiménez, Invisible Reality

Frank Herbert
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

Marie Curie
“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”
Marie Curie

Albert Einstein
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.

—"Old Man's Advice to Youth: 'Never Lose a Holy Curiosity.'" LIFE Magazine (2 May 1955) p. 64”
