New Short Story by House of Leaves Author Mark Z. Danielewski
A lifelong interest of mine has been the question of space. How we need it, fear it, want it, find it, make it, make peace with it, measure it, defend it, go to war for it, give it away, deny it, seduce it, cultivate it, think and feel because of it; whether it’s in our minds, our hearts, on the page. It’s a subject that happily sustains enduring conversations with architects, artists and musicians. Not to mention physicists. Philosophers too. (Consider how the construct of Space and Good might very well converge; let’s discuss!)
At the start of this year, I wrote a short story called “There’s a Place for You.” I designed it for The New Yorker. The New Yorker passed. As I’m now in the midst of a new novel, rather than redesign the story for another publication — something I’m not entirely convinced is possible — I’ve decided to release it online.
So here’s that New Yorker story you’ll never read in The New Yorker.
Find your columns, grow your hair, the light you sought was never in your eyes.
Tear your temples down.
Find it here:
https://www.markzdanielewski.com/digi...
There will also be a Facebook Story Club. (Or feel free to join the "Server of Leaves" on Discord.) Prospective members will need to answer a super specific question about the story to get in. It’ll run for five weeks starting August 31.

Keeping in mind that this is still a sketch, pay special attention to the larger concepts. In what way does undermining the book (not to mention the author) free the series to explore new directions? How does found footage that is at the same time both authentic and compromised differ from the book's strategies? What do you think of developing some of the readers and talking heads into characters who on their own encounter the house in the present day? Is it a must that at least some of those readers and talking heads be real? How does the introduction of the gaze following Johnny change the Johnny we know in the book? How do the various visual perspectives challenge the textual perspectives of the novel? What are the most unsettling parts? The most intriguing parts? What do you most want to know about? What do you most want to see?

THE FAMILIAR Book Club Starts July 5!
THE Book Club starts July 5! We'll be reading one volume per month. Whether this is your first read or a re-read, it'll be a fun discussion and there will also be prizes and monthly Q&As with MZD! Prizes will go to those who participate the most, participate well, read hard, and go the distance.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheFa...
Join the Facebook Group today so you'll be ready when it begins. They're fast reads and it'll be a great lead-up to VOLUME 5's Halloween release, which we'll tackle in November.
Or participate via Instagram (@markzdanielewski) as questions and discussions are posted every week.
If you've previously read VOLUMES 1-4, you're welcome to include any observations relating to other volumes. These are infinitely valuable. We just ask that you preface those posts with the word SPOILER.
