September 1st
I used to think of school starting, my father-in-law’s birthday, Fall approaching, and new beginnings. I would be invigorated by the briskness I could see and feel in my home in S.E. Alaska and the hope of newness as we prepare for the last months of the year.
This year life is so different. No kids in school. My grandchildren are releasing their balloons to heaven in a greeting and remembrance of their sister who died soon after birth sixteen years ago today. My husband is experiencing a bittersweet memory of his dad who celebrated his 89th birthday this day one year ago. In October, last year he lost him to cancer. I lost my own father almost three months ago. I have some of that bittersweetness, too.
The briskness is now a balmy 84 degrees rather than a cool breeze in 50 degrees. I’m in Texas instead of Alaska this fall, and I miss my kids and grands. I also miss my youth… well, my energy level, anyway. But I don’t miss all the activity that was our daily lives for over thirty years.
I am closing one of my businesses at the end of the year but I am excited to renew my writing efforts. It is my first love.
BUT, despite the mixed bags of feelings this year, nothing changes the very real fact that I love Fall/Autumn. I enjoy the colors, the crispness, the sun and the rain. I love fires on the beach and in the fire pits. The need for sweaters and cozy blankets that build your feelings of well being. I love snuggling up in a comfy seat with a warm drink, a fuzzy blanket and a good book.
So, here is my historical romance series for you to snuggle up to and read long into the night. Thanks for spending some of your Labor Day weekend with me. I hope you enjoy fires, sweater weather, sunshine, cool breezes, love ones and enjoyable pastimes – like reading. The Black Laird Requires out Sept. 16, 2024.

I was raising a house full of children, ours and others’, had moved out of state and moved back, held a part time then full time job and got my bachelor then master degree. All these events were simultaneous and consecutive… I was much younger… Obviously. But I had not read for pleasure in almost seven years. I have always been the read a book a day or more when I could, type of person.Anyway, I picked up my first book in all those years and inhaled it. That was 12 yrs ago, and I have been happy ever since.I had a dry spell with writing during the same time period only I did occasionally put down a line or two only nothing more than that because, yeah, University. Then I started writing and I couldn’t stop. I read, I wrote, I still worked and did my life, but this became what I made time to do just for me.What do you give time for? Reading, Writing, drawing, photography, gardening, snorkeling? Whatever you do for yourself, don’t forget to do them . Or like a love that you didn’t nourish, it will fall away and your life will be less fulfilled, less enriched, and it will be one of your regrets. Don’t do that. Find that personal love and embrace it.Check out my newsletter for what I’m doing, reading, recommending, sharing … enjoying. Share back with me your life. Adventures shared…October 5, 2023

Moving back
So, I have moved back to a sleepy (no offense, but I’m retired) little town that I graduated from once upon a time. And guess what? Apple podcasts has stumbled onto a head scratcher in my small town news and here I am, listening to the mysterious story about a woman who died here, or maybe she didn’t… Crazy as it may seem, the CIA is mentioned, Scotland Yard, former Ranger and more. No one can even agree on what she actually looks like or who she was. It is 10 episodes and I’m only on #3 I think, so I’ll be back to hear, as Paul Harvey used to say, “The rest of the story” when they finish the podcast. Here is the link if you are interested.

Anyway, I’m writing Saving Oakley, revamping Jacob’s Girl, and trying to survive the fiery heat. Thanking the Good Lord that I have air conditioning. I cannot believe my forefathers/mothers lived without it. I have so much respect for the work they did in the heat.
Don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter. Check out my Instagram, Facebook and I am trying to figure out how to make Twitter work for me again, since the cost has become prohibitive. Going to share some tidbits soon on WIPs.
Coming soon! Jacob’s Girl… (Look for a full cover reveal in the near future)

Returning
This post is all about returning. I am in transition and have decided that returning to where I started is sometimes good but always different. The saying, you can never return home is true in sentiment if not reality. I will never return to the hard days in the beginning, but I want to re-connect to the things that used to work. Chatting with you all is one of those gems I have been graced with.
I have decided that returning to some of my roots in writing as well as reading is a good thing to do, and so my new journey begins, going forward and yet in a new way. I’m more knowledgeable than I was in the beginning of my writing days, and I am more cautious now than then, but it also means that I will be more efficient, right? Well, one can hope.
If you are seeing my books have no link on this page, I’m sorry. I’m working on that. I didn’t know it was a problem after an Amazon issue, but, TA-DA! It is. So please bear with me as I reconstruct and mend not only this site but me. My life has gone a little crazy but I am determined, with assistance from Sylvia and Joe, and all of your support, to make this work.
SO, I am returning to blogging and pushing Newsletters, sharing friends’ new releases and re-vamping both the covers and the books of earlier days. New and ongoing series include Guardians of Refuge, Red Eagle Ranch, Sage County, Safe and Secure, Lords and Little Ladies, Darling Duchesses, and more.
I have added Daddy Dom books with a new series starting in the new year. Plus, more Cowboys, Native Americans, Military men and women, and soirees into Victorian parlors. I’m going to share my writing journey and what is going on in my life as well as in the world as I know it, so stick around and walk the road with me.
It promises to be an adventure.

Listen to the stories
When I was growing up, and for decades, I had never heard of Juneteenth. We always referred to June 19th as Emancipation Day even though, as I learned later, people were not truly freed on that day. That was really the Texas end of slavery. Guess everyone else decided to join the celebration. The proclamation was signed in January 1863 but didn’t technically end slavery, I believe. June 19th is celebrated when the last group of enslaved peoples was told they were free in Galveston Bay. Dec 1865 ratified the 13th Amendment, which officially abolished slavery.
As a Coastie Brat born in the turbulent sixties (please don’t do the math), I initially thought it was just my grandmother’s birthday. (It was) Then, when I learned more, I wondered what all the fuss was about. Everyone had the same right to do what they wanted, right? My friends of all ethnicities were the same, right?
Then I learned about slavery, segregation, dominant cultures, prejudices around the world, and all sorts of things I disagreed with and didn’t understand completely. Even then, my social work heart was engaged. I later learned that you were missing the point if you didn’t see color. “Seeing” color wasn’t a bad thing as I had first thought. Seeing color is seeing the diversity, the richness of different cultures, and, in some cases, their historical trauma. You will find it in every group of people all over the world.
I write fiction now, have been a social worker officially and unofficially for decades, and regardless of what you know about Juneteenth, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the 13th Amendment, I realize we are all meant to be free. I love listening to the stories of whoever wants to tell them. Learn about your fellow man, where he came from, and where he is going. Ask your neighbors how they are, listen to their stories, and laugh and cry with them. Let’s not be so self-centered in our own lives, cultures and beliefs that we can’t listen to our fellow man and get an idea of where he has walked.
When we give others a voice, it will free ours. It will allow us to share our stories as well. Not so we can feel shame for what others did and thought, but so we can be proud of what we do and think because we learned from others’ mistakes. Being kind to our fellow man is never wrong. I hope you become richer today and going forward as you listen to others’ histories and revel in the accomplishments and recounting of overcoming adversities.
(These are simple words that I thought today. They are not aimed at any one group of people, nor are they meant to cause distress. They are words meant to tell my thoughts- nothing more and nothing less. Opinion, which we are all entitled to have. However, if you are somehow offended, I apologize.)
